Chapter One

If you pass a dialogue Skill Check or if Astarion is in your party, Gandrel will reveal he is hunting for Astarion. Gandrel believes he has information about a vampire spawn attack on a village and the abduction of a child. You can choose to give Astarion up, or protect him. Holding Astarion back from killing Gandrel will earn Astarion's disapproval. If spared, he will happily trade with you though offer little besides some Arrows, Torches, Potions of Healing and a Supply Pack.

Note: It is not possible to give Astarion up to the monster hunter if Astarion has not tried to drink your blood during a Long Rest. Astarion will try to do so during his first Long Rest with the party. Without this event, no dialogue tree will give Astarion over to Gandrel.

Tactics

Despite fighting alone, Gandrel is quite a capable range thanks to his high Strength, Dexterity, Hit Points and able to use an Extra Attack. He also uses arrows effectively to hit party members who are grouped up, even more so when he's at low health as he will deal constant Critical Hits. He will also use plenty of ranger spells to either hinder or deal AoE damage. Overall, his danger just comes from his pure damage potential and rate of attacks.

Beyond killing him through a cutscene, its best to take the monster hunter by surprise. Since he relies on ranged attacks, keeping him constantly Threatened will hinder his chances of hitting, though at a low level he will likely hit anyway. If Astarion is in the party, he will focus on him above everyone else, making the vampire spawn a good distraction. While difficult, Ensnared or knocking him Prone are effective ways to limit his mobility and keep him in melee range. Also before hand, it is quite to buy up all his arrows and potions to he can't use them against you.

Trivia and Notes

  • If you admit you know Astarion, but refuse to reveal his location, Gandrel remarks, good naturedly, that "Astrarion has quite the friend in you".
