Depending on events, the completion of the Rite of Thorns absolutely CAN be tied to Long Rests. Proof: Attack and kill Kagha and all who aggro to defend her early on in her little den in the grove, then Long Rest immediately after you do so without leaving this back area. This Long Rest will cause the Rite of Thorns to be completed.
