A passive check is one that does not involve a d20 roll, but rather uses the following fixed formula to determine the value:
10 + advantage modifier + (normal modifiers that would apply)
The Advantage modifier is a +5 bonus, or a -5 penalty if the creature has Disadvantage instead.
