Alternative Ways to Acquire the Quest

I just got to the "Find the relic" part of this quest and wanted to know if I should continue. I'm glad I did, because I'm not close to ending act 2 yet.

Anyway, the first sections of the article describe how to get the quest, and that's not how I got it. I've not been in the waning moon yet, don't know who Z'rell is and didnt know Moonrise towers had a throne room. I just entered Shar's Gauntlet and talked to Balthazar when I found him.
