Rage gives resistance to the piercing damage you would take. These gloves refunds the bonus action you spent on raging that you could have spent on an attack.
You can also manually pop your own shield of thralls with these gloves to stun nearby enemies. Since normally the stun is wasted because enemies normally spend their attack in order to pop shield of thralls. Therefore wasting the stun because they already got to attack.
