Talk:List of locations
Coordinates?
What are those coordinates in these descriptions? How can I switch them ON in the game?
For example:
- Blighted Village (X:34, Y:393)

- Four days late reply, but if you can't see those on the mini-map, then something is wrong with your game, or you have a different version I am unaware of. Llamageddon (talk) 16:13, 23 August 2023 (CEST)
Names for Places
There's been some debate on this, and I am coming across a lack of consistency across pages, which is making it hard to add new pages about places in the game in a logical and clear way. It seems to me the game doesn't have any explicit definitions for location, region, etc. even when it uses those words in text or dialogue. We do need to have words for this, if only to be clearly writing articles that are of use to people. Having consistency in usage between these pages is just common sense for wiki writing.
I suggest plain English:
- Location: A specific place you can pin down. If it can be reasonably described with one set of coordinates, it is a location.
- Area: Larger than a location, pointing to it with one set of coordinates, would not be helpful, or would not make sense. Locations can be inside areas.
- Region: A collection of areas that is explicitly, or implicitly, a 'place' in its own right. Named or otherwise. If areas can be inside regions, so can locations.
Common sense and context should be able to dictate whether any of these need to be specified or not in an article. They already mean, in plain English, what they are being used to describe and identify. The nomenclature above, would be robust enough to also maintain some sort of logical hierarchy of places, and their pages, for both organisation and presentation on the wiki. - TLDR - 'Location' change to 'Position'
- Upon review, 'location' is a particularly poor example, to settle the debate on terminology for location pages. Originally it was chosen, above, due to convention and common usage by editors. Having looked into it, the game using it very specifically on the in-game map, in a particularly unclear and ambiguous way IMO.
- E.g. - There are literally only two locations on the Act I main overland map; Goblin Camp and Emerald Grove. There have been some very explicit comments about not contradicting game terms/using them correctly (which seems to be the crux of the problem for editors of location pages, and finding any consensus on a solution). Taking those concerns into account, it would mean that the vast majority of uses of the word 'location' in the wiki, particularly on location pages, are factually at odds with the one clear use of the word in-game.
- Simple solution, use a synonym not used by the game for wiki use. As long as it is consistent, it seems doubtful that it would cause serious confusion to the average reader. Off the top of my head, 'position', 'locale', 'point' are all accurate synonyms. Personally I go for 'position' as it is still plain English, and apt for use with a set of coordinates, and I can see no problem with compatibility, with any other elements of the proposition above.
- Alternatively, try and convince those who are concerned in-game terminology should take priority in situations like this, that in this case, practical use of language for editing on a topic as conceptually fundamental as 'location' should be an exception, to the otherwise sound practice of avoiding contradiction of game terms. Personally, considering how much of a road block this one word has been, one way or another, I'd go with the original 3 part definition above, replacing 'location' with 'position'. Unless I have missed something obvious, it seems comprehensible and appealingly concise, and primarily, would only need to be a concern on a very specific subsection of pages anyway. I'm planning on updating some of the earlier locations, that have clearly incorrect information or are missing fundamental details, over the next few days. For now, in the rare occasion that clarification is needed, I'm using Points of Interest when I need to reference exact locations, within a location, that lack an explicit unique name; such as loot locations, interactive objects, small areas etc. For a location entirely contained within another location, I'm using Sub-Location. This is just an explanation, not a recommendation. Feel free to correct any mistakes or change anything you think needs improvement. If anyone feels either of the terms mentioned in this comment are being used incorrectly, are misleading, or are just plain wrong, please leave a comment below this one, or on the discussion of the related page.
