Examples where the death of a companion is permanent[edit section]
While not necessarily a comprehensive list, below are known scenarios where death is permanent with characters who are recruitable companions:
- Astarion is killed by the player character upon waking up to his attempt to feed on them.
- A companion dies if Astarion is played as Origin and he fails a Saving Throw to stop himself from drinking all of their blood at camp during an evening Long Rest cutscene.
- Gale's hand is chopped off by the player character as The Dark Urge at the Roadside Cliffs Ancient Rune Circle.[1]
- Halsin dies while attempting to rescue Thaniel from the Shadow Curse.
- Jaheira is killed during the initial assault on Moonrise Towers or the subsequent battle with Ketheric Thorm atop the Towers.
- Karlach is killed as part of Wyll's questline, before or after being admitted to the party.
- Lae'zel is killed by Shadowheart in an evening cut-scene at camp after their argument over the Mysterious Artefact.
- Tricking Lae'zel into killing herself first when she reveals her intent to mercy kill the party.
- Minsc is killed during the fight in the Lower City Sewers.
- Minthara is killed while being escorted out of Moonrise Towers before being admitted to the party campsite.
- Minthara is killed in the Shattered Sanctum or during the assault she leads on the Emerald Grove.
- Shadowheart is killed in the Shadowfell after a conflict with the party as part of her quest The Chosen of Shar.
- Wyll is killed by Karlach or other party members during a cut-scene confrontation just prior to long-resting, after both have been recruited.
- A companion is sacrificed to BOOOAL in The Festering Cove.
- Lae'zel, Halsin, Gale, or Minthara is killed by Orin while chained to the Altar of Bhaal.
- A companion gives their body and soul to Haarlep.
- Alfira, a temporary companion, is an exception to the above. Should she be recruited and perish at any point after being recruited, she cannot be revived.
- Losiir, a temporary companion, is also an exception to the above. After recruitment onboard the Nautiloid, even if he survives the battle with Commander Zhalk to escape, he dies upon crashing on the Ravaged Beach and cannot be revived.

- I don't love using the talk page as overflow like this. I'd suggest instead splitting the permanent removal section of the companions page into
=== Death ===and=== Departure ===and then linking there. Capranaut (talk) 23:23, 18 July 2026 (CEST)- The idea sounds good to me but I'm not understading the implementation. Can you show me one example? I can take it from there. Raelin (talk) 23:58, 18 July 2026 (CEST)

- Are we talking about having a departure section on companion approval pages then? Raelin (talk) 00:15, 19 July 2026 (CEST)

- I think I understand now. I'll try with one. Please let me know what you think. Raelin (talk) 00:40, 19 July 2026 (CEST)

- ↑ While it is never explicitly stated in the game that Gale dies as a result of having his hand forcibly removed by the Dark Urge, he cannot be recruited if this happens and death from blood loss with complete removal of the hand is very likely in such an event without intervention.
