Upon review, 'location' is a particularly poor example, to settle the debate on terminology for location pages. Originally it was chosen, above, due to convention and common usage by editors. Having looked into it, the game using it very specifically on the in-game map, in a particularly unclear and ambiguous way IMO. | |||
E.g. - There are literally only two locations on the Act I main overland map; Goblin Camp and Emerald Grove. There have been some very explicit comments about not contradicting game terms/using them correctly (which seems to be the crux of the problem for editors of location pages, and finding any consensus on a solution). Taking those concerns into account, it would mean that the vast majority of uses of the word 'location' in the wiki, particularly on location pages, are factually at odds with the one clear use of the word in-game. | |||
Simple solution, use a synonym not used by the game for wiki use. As long as it is consistent, it seems doubtful that it would cause serious confusion to the average reader. Off the top of my head, 'position', 'locale', 'point' are all accurate synonyms. Personally I go for 'position' as it is still plain English, and apt for use with a set of coordinates, and I can see no problem with compatibility, with any other elements of the proposition above. | |||
Alternatively, try and convince those who are concerned in-game terminology should take priority in situations like this, that in this case, practical use of language for editing on a topic as conceptually fundamental as 'location' should be an exception, to the otherwise sound practice of avoiding contradiction of game terms. Personally, considering how much of a road block this one word has been, one way or another, I'd go with the original 3 part definition above, replacing 'location' with 'position'. Unless I have missed something obvious, it seems comprehensible and appealingly concise, and primarily, would only need to be a concern on a very specific subsection of pages anyway. | |||
