Spawn vs spawns. For vampire spawn, it's almost always "spawn" including when used as a countable noun.[edit source]

spawn /spôn/

noun The eggs of aquatic animals such as bivalve mollusks, fishes, and amphibians.
Offspring, especially when occurring in large numbers.
A product or an outcome.
"the spawn of a prodigious imagination."
The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition

the eggs of a fish or frog "Pacific salmon return to Alaskan streams to deposit their spawn."

Usage:
"Vampire spawn are malevolent creatures..." - Monster Manual (5th edition) Wizards of the coast, p 298

Throughout the official rules set, the game designers consistently use "spawn" as the plural. For example, the above referenced text discusses how a true vampire can control "its spawn" (referring to multiple) not "its spawns".

The word "spawns" is generally only correct used as a verb. Raelin (talk) 23:56, 18 November 2025 (CET)Reply

100% agree. I had no idea there was a debate about this. "Spawn" is clearly the correct word to use, not "spawns". NtCarlson (talk) 23:57, 18 November 2025 (CET)Reply
Actually on further investigation, the in-game dialogue does use the word "spawns" occasionally:
  • "My spawns fail me. Astarion eludes me. I WILL HAVE MY DUE."
  • "Those runes are leeching the spawns' power and sending it straight to Cazador."
But, the game more frequently uses "spawn" for the plural:
  • "It's over. Cazador is dead, the ritual is ruined, and the spawn have been set free."
  • "*The vampire lord is no more, but his legacy remains. What to do with the thousands of vampire spawn he created?*"
  • "My people were recently attacked in the night - our camp set upon by a band of vampire spawn."
So while it is not as clear cut as I initially thought, I still think "spawn" is the word to use. NtCarlson (talk) 00:06, 19 November 2025 (CET)Reply
I agree. I've been complying but Spawns just sounds wrong. Here's a previous talk article I made on it for reference: Talk:Vampire spawn AFrigidDoor (talk) 14:00, 19 November 2025 (CET)Reply
Looks like you and I independently came to the same conclusions. That does not surprise me, given your past work (I mean that as a compliment). ^ ^ Raelin (talk) 22:25, 19 November 2025 (CET)Reply
