Quick note about how licenses in mediawiki work[edit | edit source]

Special MediaWiki:Licenses page has an optionally indented unordered list. Each leaf node of the list should be of the format TEMPLATE_NAME|Human Friendly Name Of Template, and have a corresponding template. Each non-leaf node of the list will be categories. See Mediawiki's License page and Wikipedia's License Page. For convenience the below license list will be in that format too. Notes will be added with ref tags, but they will have to be stripped in the production version

Note that we will need to make template pages for each license, probably in Wikipedia-style with a little box.

  1. This is for screenshots of the game, diagrams composed of screenshots (e.g. clothing dye colors) and other content that wasn't directly ripped from game files. This is NOT a dual license, because the Larian license is incompatible with CC. Larian has the copyright for the pictured game assets, but whoever took the screenshots and/or arranged them has copyright over the arrangement of those assets. When someone picks this license, they are agreeing to release their part of the copyright as CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.
  2. Standard Larian Fan Content Policy. All things extracted directly from the game can be classified under this license.
  3. Things licensed under the OGL, such as the core 5e rules, monsters, and stats. It does not include many monsters, spells, classes, backgrounds and so on. The original OGL is technically not a CC compatible license.
  4. Things that are entirely owned by Wizards of the Coast. Anything under this license probably doesn't belong on the wiki. Wikipedia's Non-Free Content Policy is a decent barometer as to what the exceptions are.
  5. Things that are not released under a free license, but the copyright holder has allowed us to use exclusively in the context of the wiki. Fanart is the most likely thing to be under this license.
