** Once [[Volo]] has been rescued (see the quest [[Rescue Volo]]), you may tell him to find you in camp.
** In camp, Volo can attempt to remove the player's tadpole via an experimental operation.
** Needless to say - because Volo is a bumbling fool - this operation is unsuccessful and leaves the player character permanently blind in one eye. However, he gives you the ersatz eye, which negates the blindness and grants a permanent [[See Invisibility (Condition)|See Invisibility]] buff.
* Unlike other companions, Wyll cannot undergo Volo's procedure.
* Regardless of the character's appearance, the eye's appearance is always the same - equivalent to the "Blue 3" eye color option in the character creator - but can be changed with the [[Magic Mirror]] by selecting the heterochromia option, and changing the color to your preference{{Verify}}.  Even so, the eye will not return to having a black sclera. If the eye on the other side is a [[Tiefling]] or [[Dragonborn]] style eye, the combination may be particularly jarring.
* In Early Access, the ersatz eye could be pickpocketed from Volo. In the full release of the game, the player must go through with his surgery in order to obtain the eye or kill him.
* In Early Access, the ersatz eye provided +1 to {{Ability|Charisma}} and -1 to {{Ability|Intelligence}}.
