As of 4.1.1.3686210 if you have found Thrumbo through exploring before ever meeting Carrion and try a second conversation, Carrion will assume you are hostile and attack. During the first conversation either immediately trade with him using the icon in the bottom left or ask to trade and do not ask about the job.
