Orin Kidnapping Priority[edit source]

Trying to figure out what triggers the kidnapping and I think it's correct to say that it's based on approval ratings. Reason being, I poked around in the game files and found this helpful note:

"The first longrest in Lower City, Orin will abduct one of the players companion. (Lae’zel, Halsin, Gale or Minthara). Based on the players approval rating with them. (Friend, Good Friend and Romance) Highest approval will be the highest priority." The file name I found it in is CAMP_OrinAbduction_CFM_Laezel.html

I also found a note in Yenna's dialogue as follows: "When no valid companion for abduction is available, Orin instead abducts Yenna - a beggar child who previously greeted players when they entered Wyrm’s Crossing, and who subsequently keeps appearing in their camp. Appearing as Yenna, Orin will try to get the player to drink a poisoned soup, before revealing herself. She tells the player that the real Yenna is in the Bhaal Temple, and gives them an ultimatum about killing Gortash and retrieving the Netherstone. If they do this, then she will not kill Yenna, and will duel the player instead."

I've done testing and here's my own results:

  • Tav, Astarion and Halsin poly romance
  • Laezel: 100 approval
  • Gale: 99 approval
  • Halsin: 58 approval (Romanced)

My experience as of the current patch:

  • Gale, Lae'zel in party - Yenna kidnapped
  • Lae'zel in party - Gale kidnapped
  • No potential kidnapping victims in the party - Lae'zel kidnapped

I tested this both in the camp version and the sewers version. They were both the same in priority.

I also went and got the last bit of Gale approval so Lae'zel and Gale were equal. Lae'zel was prioritized over Gale if both have the max approval.

Additionally, I wasn't totally satisfied with the approval numbers since they were so close. So I made an effort to anger Gale a bit and got him down to 62 approval. Lae'zel remained at 100 approval. Lae'zel was taken and not Gale.

That said, it is possible for romanced companions to be kidnapped. However, it is hard, as they are the lowest priority (lower than Yenna). To do this, you have to tell Yenna to leave when she begs to stay at camp. I tested this on my Halsin romance save and it happened immediately - I tried 3 times to get Halsin to trigger, and I couldn't do it until I kicked Yenna out.

I am very curious about the romance metric. I'm running through a Gale romance right now but I'm not at a point where I can test the kidnapping yet. I will report back with more results when I have them. It would also be helpful for others to share their approval ratings, who was in their party, who they romanced, and who got kidnapped.

I'm currently doing a bit of testing as well and I believe the text on the main page which states that the game prioritizes companions with the lowest approval rating is incorrect.
In my playthough, I have both Minthara and Halsin at camp, and of the potential victims currently Gale has the highest approval, followed by Lae'zel, Halsin, and then Minthara. I was not in a romance with any of them, having explicitly turned down both Gale and Halsin.
I avoided triggering the kidnapping on Long Rest and entered the sewers with a party of Tav, Gale, Karlach, and Jaheira. When I first approached the Undercity Ruins trigger, it was Lae'zel who appeared. I reloaded from a quick save and swapped out Jaheira for Lae'zel and it was then Halsin that appeared. With Lae'zel, Halsin, and Gale in the party, the victim was Minthara.
The main page should probably be corrected that the companion with the highest approval who is not currently in your party is prioritized, not the lowest. Doctor Awkward (talk) 22:24, 25 May 2024 (CEST)Reply[reply]
Agree with the above, I also found the notes in the game files on highest approval behind the kidnapping priority. Regarding romances, the spam filter prevented me from linking to the IGN interview ("Baldur's Gate 3 Developers Explain Its Controversial Endings, Beloved Characters, and Making the Best RPG of 2023") where the developers discussed how they changed away from having the romanced partner always being the kidnap victim based on playtest feedback. No it's not highest affinity, either. In my run with romanced Lae'zel, and affinity order Lae'zel, Gale, Halsin, and Minthara (who's really quite low, I am playing goody-two shoes lawful stupid), I did lots of testing by entering the sewers beyond The Emperor's Hideout, below the Elfsong...
- with no party members in the party, it was Halsin kidnapped. I tried this both as just solo Tav, and with a full party of non-targets, same result both times.
- with all in party but Lae'zel, it was Yenna... Figured this had to do with her being romanced.
- with Lae'zel, Minty and Halsin at camp (but Gale in my party)... it was Minthara?... This is the biggest question I have here??? How did this happen??
- with Lae'zel, Gale and Halsin at camp (Minty in party) it was Halsin again. 66.25.255.100 04:12, 17 August 2024 (CEST)Reply[reply]
I am almost 100% sure its a priority list. My set up: Lae'zel 94 approval, Gale 100, Halsin and Minthy 58 each. If no one was in the party, Lae'zel was taken every time. 143.179.225.254 21:34, 3 July 2024 (CEST)Reply[reply]
Oh. And of course - none of them were romanced 143.179.225.254 21:35, 3 July 2024 (CEST)Reply[reply]
Hi, I have a question about Orin's kidnapping! When Minthara mimics Orin, which she does at some point, she says "pretty little flesh thing" which suggests Orin said this to her/she heard her say it and when Orin impersonates Minthara if she kidnaps her she says "her skin will make a pretty pretty tapestry" (gross, Orin). I've seen a lot of people saying Minthy and Orin were in a relationship at some point, so I was curious about if that was a coincidence or not. Avoiding the kidnapping[edit source]

It is actually possible to avoid the kidnapping before confronting Orin, unless they've changed it. There are ground triggers for the kidnap event. The east one can simply be avoided. The north one can be avoided by having a character blink over it, then activate the waypoint behind it. The party can then use the waypoint as needed to access the north sewers / catacombs, bypassing the trigger. This will result in Yenna appearing on the altar once Bhaal temple is reached.
