== Walkthrough ==
After arriving in [[Baldur's Gate]], the party needs to make their way from [[Rivington]] to Wyrm's Rock Fortress to get through to the [[Lower City]]. When the party completes [[Find a way into Wyrm's Rock fortress]], they can enter the fortress. Once they do, a Steel Watcher instantly stops them and tells them they are intruding. However, the Watcher is taken over by the voice of Gortash, who invites them to his coronation where they can speak about the future of the [[Netherstone|Netherstones]].

After entering the Audience Hall and approaching Gortash, he speaks to the party and offers an alliance, and then completes his coronation as Archduke of the city. From there, the party must decide what to do with him.

=== Full-on Assault ===
Once the party arrives at Wyrm's Rock Fortress, they can choose to do battle with Gortash at any point after meeting him in the Audience Hall. Gortash can be fought with before his coronation has even ended. If the Steel Watch has not been disabled, then the fight is significantly more difficult. The party can also force Gortash's hand to some extent. If they speak to him without Orin's Netherstone, he gives them one warning not to come back until they have it. Trying to speak to him again causes him to be hostile to the party.

If Gortash is defeated without his Steel Watch disabled, then [[Elder Brain]] takes over the Steel Watch and uses them to destroy the [[Steel Watch Foundry]]. It then takes control of the remaining Steel Watchers. If this is done, then completing [[Avenge the Ironhands]], [[Save the Gondians]], [[Rescue the Grand Duke]], and [[Disable the Steel Watch]] is not possible.

=== Disable the Steel Watch ===
In order to weaken Gortash's grip on the city, the party can undertake [[Disable the Steel Watch]]. Completing this quest results in all the Steel Watchers around the city falling about, making the battle against Gortash easier. If the party goes to the [[Iron Throne]] during this quest, Gortash warns them not to go there. If they do, this signals the end of any kind of deal between him and the party. He and the entire Wyrm's Rock Fortress become hostile upon approach.

=== Gortash's Bargain ===
When the party arrives at Wyrm's Rock Fortress, Gortash invites them to his coronation as Archduke. If the party attends and speaks to Gortash, he offers them a pact - he won't attack them so long as they leave him and his Steel Watch alone. If the party agrees to take Orin's Netherstone and return to him, he will rule the city together with them. An Insight check (DC 15) reveals he fully intends to share his kingdom with the party.

If the party takes Gortash up on his offer, he asks them to give the Netherstones to him. If the party agrees, he turns on them, as he sees them as weak-willed. If the party refuses twice, then he tells them he was simply testing them, making sure they have the backbone to make proper allies. Gortash tells the party to keep the stones and meet him at the [[Morphic Pool]] so that they can take control of the Elder Brain. However, in the confrontation with the brain, regardless of what happens, it kills Gortash, forcing the party to take the last Netherstone.

In order to ally with Gortash, the party must give up on Avenge the Ironhands, Save the Gondians, Rescue the Grand Duke, and Disable the Steel Watch. They also cannot have killed his parents in the Lower City at [[Flymm's Cobblers]]. If these actions occur, Gortash sees it as a violation of his agreement and turns hostile to the party.
