There is a book that strongly hints that "Withers" is actually Jergal, the original god of death.
A {{SmRarityItem|Crumbling Journal}} can be found at {{Coords|1078|848}} that details a mortal's encounter with {{CharLink|Jergal}}.  The physical description of Jergal and the question he asks the mortal in the book mirror the appearance of {{CharLink|Withers}} and the player's first encounter with them in the [[Overgrown Ruins]].
