After picking up the chest and stowing it, thinking I'd get around to it later (which is doable with [https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Unlock_the_Ancient_Tome other items]), I found that anything I tried in all of Act 2 didn't work, even taking it to the Gauntlet of Shar, which is technically nearby.
