Ansur is an Undead dragon found in Baldur's Gate 3. Formerly a bronze dragon nicknamed "The Waiting Storm" and the "Heart of the Gate", Ansur was generally thought to be mere legend. Depending on the player's actions, either Ulder Ravengard or Florrick reveals that Ansur is very real, offering the player a book that starts their journey to seek Ansur and its help against the Absolute.

Emerging from the Prism, the illithid greets Ansur warmly, remarking on the passage of time since their last encounter. Ansur addresses the Emperor as Balduran, prompting a response that the name's resurgence was unexpected, especially from a familiar voice.

Ansur hints at a deeper connection with Balduran, alluding to their relationship before Balduran's transformation and slaying of Ansur. The deceased dragon taunts the Emperor, suggesting he's returned with a thrall and pondering the extent of Balduran's downfall. Regardless of the player's response, Ansur's anger flares at the Emperor, accusing him of betrayal despite having given everything. This crescendos into a confrontation against the reanimated remains of the One Who Roars.

Following the battle and Ansur's second demise, the Emperor starts a conversation with the player. When questioned about his history, he unveils his identity as Balduran prior to becoming an illithid, offering a glimpse into his past.

Within these scenes, the Emperor reveals that it was actually Ansur who rescued him from the clutches of the Elder Brain's control. It was Ansur who tracked Balduran down after his abduction and infection by the colony, who brought Balduran home, and searched for a way to reverse the transformation. Ansur's dedicated efforts were unfortunately not rewarded with success, and this took a great toll on his spirit.

Ansur still clung to the hope that his friend could be cured, even after he had "exhausted all possibility" of reversing Balduran's transformation. Balduran, in contrast, now denied the idea that he "needed to be cured." The Emperor tells the player that, in his perception of events, he had accepted his fate and even saw ceremorphosis as a blessing.

The Emperor explains that, at some point, he tried to convince Ansur that this was how he truly felt. This confrontation led to the fateful night where a grieving Ansur attempted to "mercifully" end Balduran's life by killing him as he slept, but the Emperor ended up killing Ansur first.

About Ansur
Ansur/combat
As you enter The Dragon's Sanctum after your success in The Wyrmway Trials, you stumble upon the rotten carcass of a dragon. As you approach it, the corpse will reanimate and initiate dialogue.
Ansur can be a hostile enemy in at least one known combat encounter.
{{SpoilerBox|As Ansur's spirit awakens, it takes over the character that initiated dialogue and speaks through them. Ansur introduces himself as the 'Heart of the Gate - butchered in flesh, risen in spirit'.
As he finishes his introduction, the Astral Prism stirs, and Ansur senses The Emperor's presence within it. As he seems to ask the player the reason of his coming, his words are in fact directed towards the Emperor.
The illithid manifests himself out of the Prism, and greets Ansur, stating it's been too long since the two last met. Ansur greets the Emperor as Balduran, to which the Emperor responds he did not 'expect to hear this name again, least of all from the mouth of an old friend'.
Here, Ansur implies that he and Balduran were more than friends (while staying evasive on the subject), until he was killed by Balduran himself. The dead dragon asks the Emperor if he's come to dance on his bones, to which the Emperor states that Ansur left him no choice.
The player thus learns that Ansur offered to kill Balduran when he was turning illithid, thinking it was a merciful death and avoiding him the excruciating pain of ceremorphosis. Ansur taunts the Emperor, wondering how far the great Balduran has fallen.
Whatever the player tries to say, Ansur will lash out at the Emperor, stating he gave him everything, and he was repaid in death. The fight against the corpse of the One Who Roars starts at this moment.

Notable loot
After the fight and the second death of Ansur, the Emperor will initiate dialogue with the player. If pressed on revealing his past, the Emperor will reveal that he was indeed Balduran before his illithid transformation, and shows the player a part of his story.
* Balduran's Giantslayer
It is revealed that it is Ansur that saved the Emperor from the Elder Brain's domination. Ansur was hellbent on helping Balduran to find a cure, but nearly became mad in the attempt. At this moment, Balduran didn't think himself as sick, and the behaviour of his friend was upsetting.
* Dear Ansur
The Emperor tried to convince Ansur that ceremorphosis was the best thing that happened to him, but he felt Ansur only saw a mind flayer, and not Balduran anymore. A night, Ansur decided to take matters into his own hands, and tried to killed Balduran in his sleep, out of mercy.
* Helm of Balduran
Out of self-preservation, the Emperor killed Ansur first, and says he does not regret this action (but rather the necessity of it), given all he has gained since.}}
