On my most recent game, right after the invasion at Last Light Inn, I headed to the Sharran Sanctuary in the middle of town, and after that went for Rolan, only to find him undead. I reloaded a save after Last Light, but before the Sanctuary, and this time he was still alive. The only other thing that was different between attempts to save him was that I took a short rest after fighting the guards in the Sanctuary. I'm guessing he works like Nere, and transitioning to another map after he heads out leads to him dying.
