Not to be confused with Ancient Altar (Balthazar)

Ancient Altar is a kind of environmental object in Baldur's Gate 3. It blocks progress until Umbral Gems are inserted in their slots.

Involvement[edit | edit source]

Two Ancient Altars can be found inside the Gauntlet of SharGauntlet of Shar. One is located in the upper area north of the entrance of the Gauntlet. The other is in the lower area.

The first altar, the one in the upper area, has two slots which can be filled with Umbral Gems. One slot is already pre-filled; inserting another gem unlocks a platform which can be used to travel down. It stands atop a Pedestal of Reckoning, which can be interacted with, reading the following:

  • "Brave the Gauntlet of your Lady Shar. Surmount her trials, and rise a Dark Justiciar."

Further interaction with it grants additional background information and serves as a trigger of dialogue with ShadowheartShadowheart if she is present.

The second altar, the one in the lower area, has three slots which also must filled with umbral gems. Doing so unlocks access to The Verge of Shadows.

After inserting umbral gems, the altar lights up and cannot be interacted with further.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

The first altar has been reported to fail to activate the platform. The exact trigger for this unknown. If it fails to activate, a prior save (usually before having collected any umbral gems) is needed to avoid the bug. As this bug bricks the game, it may be advisable to have several saves while in the Gauntlet of Shar.
