It is possible that the sapling Klarrvox is trying to save is at risk of turning into a Blight, a plant-based creature that is usually tainted by evil forces, with the ability to turn entire landscapes into desolate blight-infested wastelands.

Blights originate and are created due to the influence of deep, dark, or evil forces in their premises. This evil "essence" can inherently corrupt vegetation, and either take control or wither existing healthy biomass, capable of tearing up entire buildings within days. As the sapling is located right at a crossroad between the Mummy Lord  Mystic Carrion's necromantic home full of Undead and corpses, as well as down the road from the Szarr Palace's back entrance, where the Vampire Lord  Cazador Szarr resides with his seven thousand Vampire spawns, this may explain the sapling's condition.

Additionally, the first known origins of blights were from a vampire by the name of  Gulthias, who was staked through the heart. The stake would eventually be corrupted by the vampire's blood and foul essence, eventually turning into roots and then a series of blights.
