Mystic Carrion
Mystic Carrion is an undead mummy lord in Baldur's Gate.
“You are familiar with 'The Necromancy of Thay'.<...> Such a book is for those who make only the shallowest ripples in death's dark pools. I inhabit the depths.„
Involvement[edit | edit source]
Mystic Carrion resides on the lower floor of Philgrave's Mansion and acts as a Trader. Several Ghouls roam the mansion as Mystic Carrion uses them for his dark work. He can be reached either by detecting and lockpicking the stone wall at X: -8 Y: -158, destroying the stone wall, using the hole in the wall at X: 29 Y: -166 to sneak in, or by lockpicking the balcony entrance.
Mystic Carrion asks the party what they are doing, as they do not have an appointment. He explains he is a spirit medium who works with wealthy clients in the Upper City. Carrion believes the party is too poor to seek his services, but asking "Is there anything I can do for you?" gets his attention. He does indeed have a job – seeking out his lost servant, Thrumbo. This starts the quest Find Mystic Carrion's Servant.
If the party choose to ally with Thrumbo or destroy any of Mystic Carrion's organ jars, he becomes hostile and attacks as soon as they return to Philgrave's Mansion. Likewise, if the party destroy any of Mystic Carrion's jars before ever meeting him, he is immediately hostile.
If Mystic Carrion is defeated without first destroying the Jar of Mystic Carrion's Heart, and then a long rest is taken, Carrion resurrects himself, destroys Thrumbo and his friends, and hides his heart in the basement of Philgrave's Mansion. In this case, if the party possess any of his other jars but do not destroy them, all jars in the party's possession will be replaced with a Threat from Mystic Carrion after every long rest while Carrion remains alive. He will provide new commentary for the next three battles, should the party choose to engage him again.
If the party started the quest Search the Cellar and obtained or read The Necromancy of Thay, Mystic Carrion offers his services of spirit channelling for 1500 gold.[1] If accepted, the spirits tell of another book called The Tharchiate Codex located in Sorcerous Sundries, which they claim is key to unlocking the power of The Necromancy of Thay.
Finally, if Mystic Carrion is fought, he summons several Ancient Servants to aid him. However, it is not necessary to defeat them or his other minions; if the entire party flee combat and return later, the survivors are no longer hostile and, if spoken with, may express gratitude or joy for being freed from his control.
The permanent death of Mystic Carrion grants the inspiration An Overdue Slaughter to party members with the Haunted One background.

- As of Patch 5 Hotfix 17, the secret wall door on the balcony can be opened using a Gilded Chest as a key. It is currently unknown if it requires a specific Gilded Chest.[verify]
Notes[edit | edit source]
- ↑ It is not necessary to pay Mystic Carrion to advance the quest Unlock the Ancient Tome, although doing so provides some hints and leads to an interesting cut scene.
