Shield Master: Block is a reaction/passive feature obtained by selecting the Shield Master feat. It negates damage from many area of effect attacks on a successful Saving Throw.
Description
If a spell forces you to make a Dexterity Saving Throw[See Notes], you can use your Reaction to shield yourself and diminish the effect's damage.
On a failed save, you only take half damage[See: Bugs]. On a successful save, you don't take any damage, even if you normally would.

Reaction: Shield Master: Block
Shield yourself from a spell attack: when you fail a Dexterity Saving Throw on a spell, you only take half damage. When you succeed, you take no damage.
How to learn
Granted by the feats: Shield Master (Feat)
Notes
- Despite the description of this feature, it does not matter whether an action has a Dexterity saving throw or whether it is a spell. As a rule of thumb, explosions which involve a Dexterity saving throw can be blocked (e.g., Fireball but not Sacred Flame which does use a Dexterity saving throw but involves a single target). However, this is not true of every such explosion and there are actions without Dexterity saving throws which can also be blocked (e.g., Frost Breath which uses a Constitution saving throw). Refer to this table for a comprehensive list of actions which can be blocked with this feature.
Bugs
- This passive provides no effect on a failed save.
