Zariel is the Archdevil ruler of Avernus[1], the first layer of the Nine Hells. Tieflings of her bloodline, the Zariel Tieflings, are empowered with martial strength and can channel searing flames.

History[edit | edit source]

Zariel is a fallen angel. When she was still a Celestial, she was tasked with monitoring the Blood War. She took it upon herself to take action, and led an unsuccessful invasion of Avernus. She was defeated.[2]

She is credited with killing a horde of Yeenoghu's Gnolls.[3]

Karlach Karlach was one of Zariel's prized soldiers.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Zariel is the main antagonist of the game's prequel D&D adventure Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus. The adventure takes place a short time prior to the beginning of Baldur's Gate 3.
  • The pronunciation guide provided with Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus gives two pronunciations for Zariel's name, "ZAR-ee-el" and "ZAIR-ee-el". The former is used throughout Baldur's Gate 3.
