Volo's Ersatz Eye is a common item.

Description Icon.png

While the ersatz eye is embedded in your eye socket, you can see through the tiny orb as though it were a normal eye. Can't be removed once inserted.

A hollow bead of white glass, carefully painted to resemble a realistic eye. Its tarnished brass fittings hum with a tinge of magic.

Properties

Effect

  • If received through dialogue grants See Invisibility See Invisibility permanently. Like the spell, this buff allows you to see creatures that are Invisible within 9 metres if they fail a Dexterity saving throw.
  • Otherwise, the item is a useless bauble.

Where to find

  • As an item, the eye can be looted from Volo's corpse. However in order to gain See Invisibility buff, the player must undergo the surgery.

Notes

  • To obtain Volo's Ersatz Eye (passive feature) the player must undergo surgery with Volo:
    • Once Volo has been rescued (see the quest Rescue Volo), you may tell him to find you in camp.
    • In camp, Volo can attempt to remove the player's tadpole via an experimental operation.
    • Needless to say - because Volo is a bumbling fool - this operation is unsuccessful and leaves the player character permanently blind in one eye. However, he gives you the ersatz eye, which negates the blindness and grants a permanent See Invisibility buff.
  • Unlike other companions, Wyll cannot undergo Volo's procedure.
  • In Early Access, the ersatz eye could be pickpocketed from Volo. In the full release of the game, the player must go through with his surgery in order to obtain the eye or kill him.
  • In Early Access, the ersatz eye provided +1 to Charisma Charisma and -1 to Intelligence Intelligence.
  • The color of the Ersatz eye is very similar to "Blue 3"; careful discernment with a close-up of the PC's face reveals it has a brighter blue and yellow coloration (for example, in conversation scenes or while changing appearance with the Magic Mirror). If the player wishes to (mostly) avoid the Heterochromia look, Blue 3 is the closest match.
