The River Chionthar is a wide river that runs from the Far Hills to the Sword Coast. The Risen Road runs parallel to the river. In Baldur's Gate 3, the player travels downriver along the Chionthar towards Baldur's Gate.

Many cities and settlements are on or near the banks of the river. The citystate of Baldur's Gate has its harbour in the rivers estuary. Rivington is a small settlement on the eastern outskirts of Baldur's Gate. Wyrm's Crossing, a double bridged fortress, allows the Coast Way to cross the Chionthar into Baldur's Gate. Continuing eastward and upriver one can find Reithwin Town, Moonhaven, and the city of Elturel, among others.
