Threatened (Condition)

Jump to search
- An enemy is close. Has Disadvantage on ranged Attack Rolls.
Notes
- This condition applies to any within the melee range of a hostile creature in combat. A creature's melee range can be affected by the reach of their melee weapon.
- The condition itself has no effect on attacks against the threatening enemy; the disadvantage only applies to ranged attacks against other creatures. If multiple enemies are in threatening range, then the Threatened creature will have disadvantage against all of them.
- However, there is also a separate source of disadvantage ("Target is too close") when making a ranged attack from within 3 m / 10 ft of a target, meaning most creatures will have disadvantage on ranged attacks against a threatening creature.
- This can be removed by Crossbow Expert: Point-Blank, making it possible to use crossbow attacks without disadvantage against an enemy at close range. This does not work, however, if one is Threatened by multiple creatures.
- Because of how the "Target is too close" effect is implemented, it is possible for a target to be within an aura with a range of 3 m / 10 ft (such as Aura of Murder) while not being close enough to grant disadvantage on ranged attacks. This is because the effect measures the distance from the centre of the attacker to the target, while an aura accounts for the size of a creature's hitbox.
Bugs
- When attacking a very large target, like the Dominated Red Dragon, multiple parts of it may threaten the attacker at once, as if surrounded by multiple enemies, causing all ranged attacks to have disadvantage. This makes Crossbow Expert: Point-Blank useless against such targets.
