Overview[edit section | visual editor]
The Upper City is a region in Baldur's Gate in Act Three. It is the wealthy district of Baldur's Gate, that lays north of the city's oldest wall and its namesake gate. It is home to the city's noble patriar families, who typically live in estates. Contrary to the rest of Baldur's Gate where the Fist operates, the upper city has its own law enforcement called The Watch. The Watch are well-trained and authorised to use lethal force if patriars are threatened.[1]
In-game, only a small part of the upper city is available,[2] although several places are mentioned. For example; the [3], the shops Dersu's Vintage Tipple[4] and Fine Fabrics[5], as well as estates typically owned by patriars.[6]
Access[edit section | visual editor]

Access to the Upper City is limited, the main gate at the Upper City Gate Checkpoint is closed due to the threat of the Cult of the Absolute.[7] The upper city can only be accessed during the final quest Confront the Elder Brain by traveling through the Morphic Pool.
Two buildings in the upper city can be accessed freely prior to the final quest through specific mechanics.
- Ramazith's Tower is linked to the Sorcerous Sundries by portal.
- Szarr Palace has a door on its ramparts, which are in the lower city.[8]
Locations[edit section | visual editor]
High Hall[edit section | visual editor]

The High Hall area is named after its main building, which serves as the spot where the party can reach The Netherbrain. The area contains a courtyard which is located in front of the hall. The courtyard is filled with enemies and has to be battled through. Alternatively the sewers underneath the area can be used to reach the hall. The high hall location is accessible only after traveling to the Morphic Pool and is the last area before the final battle of the game.
Ramazith's Tower[edit section | visual editor]

Ramazith's Tower is a three-level magical spire located within the Upper City. While geographically part of the Upper City, it is primarily accessed via a portal on the top floor of Sorcerous Sundries in the Lower City. Due to its magical concealment, the tower is largely obscured from view for those wandering the streets below.
It is the home and stronghold of the wizard Lorroakan, and is tied directly to the quest Find the Nightsong.
Szarr Palace[edit section | visual editor]

Szarr Palace is the home of Cazador Szarr and explored in the quest Investigate Cazador's Palace. Although it is located in the Upper City, the palace only can be accessed from the Lower City by climbing stairs in the Central Watch Tower at the Lower City Central Wall Waypoint at X: -53 Y: -64 or by jumping (or similar) from the roof of the Devil's Fee to the palace's ramparts. In the palace fast travelling and resting is not possible.
Upper City Sewers[edit section | visual editor]

The Upper City Sewers is a transitional area accessible only during the High Hall sequence. It provides a strategic shortcut, allowing the party to bypass portions of the main courtyard on their approach to the The Netherbrain.
Entrances:
- Ruined Tower: Through a metal door located in a tower along the pathway leading up to the courtyard.
- Sewage Gate: Through a destructible iron gate near the Watch Citadel.
Inside the sewers the party must face enemies, one of them being the Death Knight Stalker Svignee.
