Area level

Area level refers to the number from 1 to 12 assigned by the developers to some region and locations in the game. This level affects the experience rewards through the entire game. The area level is not visible anywhere in the user interface.

Experience rewards

The area level affects the experience rewards when defeating creatures and completing quests steps.

Defeating creatures

When the party defeats a creature, if the creature level is lower than the area level where the creature was defeated, then the game uses the area level to choose the experience reward. For example, when defeating a level 1 Goblin creature in the level 3 Blighted Village area, the game will use the area level and consider the creature to be level 3. This changes the experience reward from 10 to 20 experience.

Completing quest steps

The quests on themselves don't grant experience on completion, but their steps do. The amount of experience rewarded for completing a step is determined by the level of the area that triggers the completion. For example, in the quest Find the Blood of Lathander occurring in Act One, one of the steps is "We learned that a powerful holy relic, the Blood of Lathander, could be somewhere nearby. We should keep an eye out for it as we explore the monastery.". Its completion triggers inside the level 5 Rosymorn Monastery area. As a result, completing this step grants 30 experience.
