Mystic Carrion seeks his servant.

Find Mystic Carrion's Servant is a quest in Chapter Three of Baldur's Gate 3. It can be started by speaking with Mystic Carrion in Philgrave's Mansion.

Objectives

Find Thrumbo for Mystic Carrion.
    • We met Mystic Carrion, who promised to reward us if we bring back the body of one of his zombie servants, Thrumbo. He believes Thrumbo will still be somewhere in the Lower City.
    • We agreed to bring Thrumbo's body back to Mystic Carrion. He told us that Thrumbo has three other zombie companions. If we find them, they might be able to tell us where Thrumbo went.
    • We found a hidden note from Thrumbo addressed to his fellow zombie servants. He plans to buy a boat and row them all to freedom. They are to meet at the beach.
    • We found the zombie Morbus. He told us that Thrumbo's meeting point for them was 'down the stairs, across the sand'.
    • We found the zombie Lumbar. He told us that Thrumbo was going to get a boat. He must be hiding somewhere near the water.
    • We found the zombie Sacrum. He told us that Thrumbo was looking for an abandoned house for them to hide in. Thrumbo told him that wardrobes are good hiding places.
    • We killed Mystic Carrion. We should let Thrumbo know he is no longer being pursued.
Talk to Thrumbo.
    • We found Thrumbo, the zombie whose body Mystic Carrion asked us to bring him. Maybe we should talk to him.
Decide Thrumbo's fate.
    • Thrumbo asked us to turn against Mystic Carrion. He warned us that the mystic will keep resurrecting unless we find a jar with his heart inside it and destroy it.
Deliver Thrumbo's body to Mystic Carrion.
    • We killed Thrumbo. We may want to bring his body to Mystic Carrion, as requested.
Kill Mystic Carrion for good.
    • Our deal with Mystic Carrion fell through and he became hostile. We have no choice but to deal with him.
    • Mystic Carrion is dead, but Thrumbo warned us that he will just resurrect. He suggested that the resurrection will take place wherever Carrion's heart is. We should find his heart.
    • Mystic Carrion resurrected, killing Thrumbo in the process.
    • Mystic Carrion's heart is destroyed. If we kill him now, he will die for good.
Quest Complete
  • We managed to lay Mystic Carrion to rest once and for all.
  • We gave Thrumbo's body to Mystic Carrion, as requested.
  • We gave the jar containing Mystic Carrion's heart back to him.
  • We gave the jar containing Mystic Carrion's heart back to him and successfully negotiated a better deal for it.

Walkthrough

Mystic Carrion is encountered by entering Philgrave's Mansion - either by lockpicking the stone wall, or using the hole in the wall (X:29 Y:-166) to sneak in. Carrion asks the party what they are doing because they do not have an appointment. He explains that he is a spirit medium who works with wealthy clients in the Upper City. Carrion believes the party is too poor to seek his services, but asking "Is there anything I can do for you?" will get his attention. He does indeed have a job - seeking out his lost servant, Thrumbo.

Finding Thrumbo

Going upstairs in the mansion, there is an additional floor that a creature will warn the party not to go up to, as it's dangerous. However, the party can walk right past him to the next floor. If they are spotted, a creature named Thenar stops the party and state they cannot be on the floor. However, he can be persuaded, deceived, or intimidated into letting the party stay. A locked room in the northwest corner of the floor has a beggar's portrait (X:5, Y:-150) that contains a note from Thrumbo, indicating they are going to meet by the beach.

  • Lumbar (X:125, Y:-28) is in an alley north of the Basilisk Gate. He reveals the group was planning to escape by boat, so Thrumbo is probably by the water.
  • Morbus (X:2, Y:17) is in the graveyard north of the Forge of the Nine. He only remembers that Thrumbo told him 'down the stairs, across the sand'.
  • Sacrum (X:-78, Y:-98) is north of Beehive General Goods. He mentioned that wardrobes are good hiding places.

Thrumbo's location is in a house by the docks that are east of Philgrave's Mansion. He is hiding in a wardrobe in the beach house (X:56, Y:-120). Interacting with the wardrobe causes Thrumbo to come out.

Thrumbo panics at the thought of returning to Mystic Carrion.

Telling Thrumbo that Mystic Carrion is seeking him will cause Thrumbo to panic. He will tell the party his side of the story if they ask. Thrumbo says that he and his companions were normal beggars until they were killed by Mystic Carrion and unwillingly turned into his undead servants. He believes that Mystic Carrion is a mummy lord and that finding his heart is the key to stopping him. The party can then continue working for Mystic Carrion, or change sides and aid Thrumbo in his liberation from Carrion.

Siding with Mystic Carrion

Thrumbo can be attacked at any point after finding him. The party needs to kill him and pick up his body, then take it back to Mystic Carrion. Mystic Carrion will instantly recognize the scent of Thrumbo and take his body. Choosing "Not so fast. First, tell me about the reward you promised." then "Is that the going rate for canopic jars these days? I expected more." will open Carrion up to potential bargaining. Passing the intimidation or persuasion check (DC 20) makes Carrion add in some gold to sweeten the deal.

Siding with Thrumbo

The location of A Mummy's Memories.

Siding with Thrumbo initiates Defeat Mystic Carrion. To kill Mystic Carrion for good, his heart must be destroyed. Thrumbo mentions he was brought down to a cellar by Mystic Carrion, so the Mansion is a good place to begin. Take the stairs on the side of the mansion without entering the room that Mystic Carrion is in. On this floor, there is a locked door. Lockpicking it leads to a room full of corpses and, further north, an iron ladder (X:19, Y:-153). Take the ladder to find part of Mystic Carrion's lair. Within the lair is a book called A Mummy's Memories which references an ancient lair in the Undercity Ruins. Alternatively, there is a hole in the wall (X:-1499, Y:-140) that can be bypassed using Wild Shape, Disguise Self, Gaseous Form, or other means.

Location of Funerary Jar Form and Function.

Using the Undercity Ruins waypoint, move west to discover a passageway (X:-180, Y:934). Entering the passageway, there is a room full of gilded chests. Interacting with them causes a horde of undead monsters to rise up and attack the party. Either battle the undead or ignore the treasure, and move to the stone wall to the north (X:-1390, Y:75). Lockpick the door (DC 20) and the party will arrive at the Ancient Lair. In the corner of the lair is a book called Funerary Jar Form and Function ((X:-1395, Y:84). Reading it reveals that Carrion's heart is inside of Thrumbo.

Return to Thrumbo and tell him the heart is inside of him. Disturbed, he will puke up the canopic jar. The jar can be destroyed using ranged attacks, as it explodes upon its destruction and deals massive damage.

There are three other canopic jars which can be destroyed to weakon Mystic Carrion, but are not necessary to permanently defeat him:

  • Jar of Mystic Carrion's Lungs is in the mortuary - accessed via a hatch in the graveyard
  • Jar of Mystic Carrion's Liver is in the Gilded Chest in the Ancient Lair
  • Jar of Mystic Carrion's Brain is on the table in the Ancient Lair

Now that Mystic Carrion's heart is destroyed, he can be destroyed permanently. Return to the mansion and face off against him to free Thrumbo and his friends once and for all.

Once Mystic Carrion is defeated, his body can be looted. It has Scroll of Circle of Death, Staff of Cherished Necromancy, Armour of the Sporekeeper, Veil of the Morning, Crystalline Lens, and a Rusty Key that opens the gilded chest in the back of the room. The chest contains the Torch of Revocation. After Mystic Carrion's death, Thrumbo takes over as a trader, selling the same items as his former master.
