This article is about the toggleable passive to use Tides of Chaos before a roll is made. For the reaction to use it after a roll, see Tides of Chaos.

Tides of Chaos is a Wild Magic sorcerer toggleable passive feature which grants Advantage on the sorcerer's next ability check. After this feature is triggered, the next spell cast has a greatly increased chance of a creating a Wild Magic surge (50% chance instead of the normal 5%).

Alternatively, this feature can be triggered after a roll is failed with the corresponding reaction.

Notes

  • Wild Magic Sorcerers receive 1 Tides of Chaos Charge which is replenished on every Short Rest or Long Rest.
  • Normally, a D20.png d20 is rolled each time a levelled spell is cast. If the result is 20, a Surge is triggered. Tides of Chaos reduces the Difficulty Class (DC) to 11 (i.e. a 50% chance).

Bugs

  • Tides of Chaos grants a toggleable passive by the same name which, when toggled on, provides Advantage on the character's next Ability Check. Due to the way this passive is granted, it defaults to "off" and cannot be toggled "on" the very first time it is acquired until after the character has first made an ability check, has had a condition applied to it, has used a short rest, or has taken a long rest.
