Reliable Talent

Reliable Talent is a passive feature gained by rogues at level 11. It treats any roll under 10 as a 10.

Description

When you make an Ability Check with a Skill you are Proficient with, the lowest result you can roll on the die is 10.

How to learn

Notes

  • This is a very versatile class feat, as it removes the floor principle of bounded accuracy[1] on all ability checks where a rogue has proficiency. When applied, this passive modifies a d20 roll lower than 10 (including a 1) to a 10; modifiers are still applied afterwards. This can make skill checks of low to moderate DC where a rogue has proficiency guaranteed to succeed, and removes the chance to critically fail on qualifying ability checks.
  • This passive works well with the Githyanki racial feat Astral KnowledgeAstral Knowledge.
  • This passive helps in combat with Stealth checks, such as those made while using Greater InvisibilityGreater Invisibility, and Athletics checks to ThrowThrow or ShoveShove enemies.
  • For a multiclassed rogue character with this feature, it may be advisable to start as a rogue at level 1 (or respec with WithersWithers to do so) for proficiency in four skills.

Bugs

  • For unknown reasons, Reliable Talent is known to fail when rolling a religion check for the Mirror of Loss, failing to function for every other character or so.[verify]
