Derryth Bonecloak, if returned from the Underdark without noblestalk

Overview edit

Bonecloak Apothecary is a large apothecary which lines up the central square of the lower City together with Sorcerous Sundries and the Lower City Central Wall. It is a two-storied building with a basement and a greenhouse added to the western side.

The apothecary is owned and run by a dwarven couple, DerrythDerryth and Baelen BonecloakBaelen Bonecloak. Both can be first met in Act One in the Underdark, in the Myconid Colony. They went to the underdark hoping to gather some Noblestalk - a precious and valued type of mushroom. The state of their apothecary in Act Three directly depends on the fate of both Bonecloaks.

If both Baelen and Derryth die in the Underdark in Act One, or if Derryth dies and Baelen is not rescued, the Bonecloak's Apothecary is closed, with a simple note left out front that says "Gone shroom hunting".

If Derryth and / or Baelen survived, they can be found in the apothecary. In this case, the default trader is Derryth, unless Baelen survived and consumed the Noblestalk. Either way, the party can stock up with potions and various alchemical ingredients. If the party picked up the Noblestalk and gave it to Derryth, she sells three pieces of it as well. Unlike the one found in the Underdark, these Noblestalk cannot be used by ShadowheartShadowheart or Dark UrgeDark Urge to restore memories.

Apothecary layout edit

Ground Level edit

The interior of Bonecloak's Apothecary

The ground floor of the apothecary consists of a store and greenhouse. In the store, some common herbs can be freely taken. On a bookcase shelf at X: -20 Y: -33 lies the Bonecloak Apothecary's Chest Key. On the western side is a stairway to the first floor.

If the party walk behind the counter and further to the west, they find the greenhouse. There, several herbal alchemical ingredients can be found and freely taken. In the middle is a red-outlined locked hatch to the basement (DC 10 Sleight of Hand check DC 10 Sleight of Hand check to lockpick).

Behind the wooden screen dividing the store from the path to the greenhouse stands a locked wooden chest (DC 10 Sleight of Hand check DC 10 Sleight of Hand check as well). Inside are several non-herbal alchemical ingredients.

If Derryth returned from the Underdark without Baelen, she expresses her loneliness to the party. However, they can help her with this. There are three cats in different corners of the central square and around: BarsikBarsik, MaltaMalta, and MyshkaMyshka. Each of them can be convinced to accompany Derryth via various skill checks. If convinced, the chosen cat resides in the apothecary afterwards.

First floor edit

The first floor has a small bedroom which can be reached at the end of the hall. It contains no remarkable items except for Derryth's Journal, the contents of which depends on the fate of Derryth and Baelen, and an unsent letter from Derryth to her former suitor.

Basement edit

The basement can be accessed through a locked hatch in the greenhouse. It has two rooms with multiple containers, which may contain alchemical ingredients of herbal and / or fungal derivation. In the second room is a locked Heavy Chest, which contains the Counting House Safe nº3 Key. It can be opened with a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check DC 10 Sleight of Hand check or a certain key (see below).

On the western wall is a notice that reads "Preparing brews. Feck off", and several crates at X: 1453 Y: 843 which partially conceal a lever. Using the lever lowers the wall to provide entrance to the apothecary's underground laboratory. The lab contains more alchemical ingredients stored in crates and sacks, as well as an Elixir of Psychic Resistance and a Potion of Speed. Several Bibberbang are scattered throughout the room.

At X: 1442 Y: 842 is a wooden chest which can be opened with a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check DC 15 Sleight of Hand check or with the first apothecary key from the bookshelf upstairs. Down the path at X: 1412 Y: 843 in a bottle rack lies the second apothecary key[1] which opens aforementioned heavy chest.

Journals and notes left on workbenches shed some light onto Baelen's mind disease and his desperate attempts to cure it while he still could think clear.

Outside the apothecary edit

There are several NPC vignettes around the Bonecloak's Apothecary.

  • Just across the apothecary entrance News Hawker JasonNews Hawker Jason attracts the customers. Another trader, a gnome named MohanMohan, stands modestly near the greenhouse windows. Mohan sells various scrolls and coatings, and sets of Thieves' Tools as well.
  • A brass dragonborn Pritt YellowbreathPritt Yellowbreath walks around the apothecary building, ranting aloud about the contents of the Baldur's Mouth Gazette. She is severely vexed at the paper's editors as they recently stopped printing puzzles.
