Lyrthindor is a secret Dark Justiciar in the Gauntlet of Shar.
These hands...too big. Where are the others? Where's the rest of me?!
Lyrthindor upon reappearing in front of the party

History[edit | edit source]

Lyrthindor was a member of Ketheric Thorm'sKetheric Thorm's Dark Justiciar army, during the Sharran occupation of Reithwin Town and its surroundings over a hundred years ago. Originally a husband and father, the plague took his family and Lyrthindor turned to SharShar in his grief. He was one of many Sharrans who became a Justiciar through completion of the Gauntlet of Shar's trials, reaching the final test wherein he sacrificed the Nightsong.[1]

As Ketheric's war progressed, MorfredMorfred, a member of the Selûnite resistance, made a deal with RaphaelRaphael to destroy Ketheric's Justiciar army.[2][3] YurgirYurgir was sent to the Gauntlet to fulfil Raphael's side of the bargain, his own Infernal Contract stating that he would only be released from service if he killed every single Justiciar.[4] With no intention of actually freeing Yurgir, Raphael offered Lyrthindor help to escape from the slaughter.[5] He gave Lyrthindor the book  One Becomes Many, which detailed how to transform into a swarm of rats in order to hide from Yurgir.[6]

With Yurgir unable to leave the Gauntlet, and Lyrthindor still in hiding, the two remained there for the next hundred years.

Involvement[edit | edit source]

Lyrthindor has hidden himself from YurgirYurgir by transforming himself into the many ratsrats scattered around the gauntlet. By Raphael's design, this prevented Yurgir from completing his contract with Raphael.

The first few times the rats are encountered, the party can examine the rats to find out that there is more than meets the eye:

  • [ANIMAL HANDLING] Study the rat's behaviour. (DC 14)
  • [INSIGHT] Consider the rat's tone, and choice of words. (DC 14)
  • [MONK] [INSIGHT] Study the rat's ki to see the source of its aggression. (DC 16)

Attacking one of the rats panics them, and they start to recover a bit of their memories. One of the rats initiates a conversation with the party and attempts to bargain. If this deal is accepted, the rat scurries off, no other rats can then be found in the temple anymore and the Break Yurgir's ContractBreak Yurgir's Contract quest completes without freeing Yurgir; the map is marked with the Sharran Provisions, which are located in a loose brick at X: -684 Y: -708.

However, if the first rat being attacked is one of those near the gargantuan-sized statue of SharShar at X: -717 Y: -723, it is only necessary to defeat the rats which manifest and fight against the party at that location for Lyrthindor to appear; he must then be killed to complete Break Yurgir's ContractBreak Yurgir's Contract. Any remaining rats in the Gauntlet of Shar turn hostile on sight if Lyrthindor is defeated first.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

  • As of Patch 8, Lyrthindor may start flashing in combat. He can still be targeted for attacks by clicking on him (or his portrait in the initiative order) while he is present on the screen. The bug prevents him from making any attacks. Area of effect attacks can be quite useful in this situation, particularly lingering ones such as Cloud of DaggersCloud of Daggers as he then stands in place while flashing only to end his turn.[verify] Flashing breaks the UI and prevents the usage of spells which need a variety selection. This bug can be fixed by applying the WetWet condition on him. However, this does not fix his inability to take any kind of action.[verify]
  • After killing Lyrthindor, some rats may still be alive near the Gauntlet of Shar waypoint; they then flee if approached.[verify]
