  • Affected entity is invisible to enemies until it crosses their cone of sight.
  • The entity has Advantage Icon.png Advantage on all Attack rolls.

Notes

  • If a player character is in the line of sight of a non-allied creature, and is either in melee range or considered to be in a Clear AreaClear Area (see obscurity and darkvision), then the character is spotted immediately.
  • If they are in the line of sight of a non-allied creature while considered Lightly ObscuredLightly Obscured (with darkvision taken into account) and not in melee range, then the player character rolls a Stealth check contesting a passive Perception check by the other creature. This is displayed as a Hiding Check in the combat log, whose Difficulty Class is determined by the passive Perception score of the other creature. It is repeated every turn (or every 6 seconds outside of turn-based mode) and for each non-allied creature that has line of sight on the hiding player character.
  • The line of sight of creatures without darkvision does not extend into Heavily ObscuredHeavily Obscured areas, so they cannot detect a character hiding in such an area.
  • Attacking automatically ends hiding, meaning that undetected stealth attacks cannot be made from within an enemies' line of sight, even if successfully hiding in obscurity prior to the attack. However, attacking from hiding is still beneficial, because it confers AdvantageAdvantage on the attack roll.
  • Lines of sight (aka 'vision cones') are shown with a red overlay when the selected player character is currently in hiding. They can be manipulated using distractions such as Minor IllusionMinor Illusion or MeowMeow, which compel creatures to turn towards a specific direction and / or walk to another location. This can create an opening for a pickpocketing attempt or a stealth attack.
  • Hiding inside a Fog CloudFog Cloud is an automatic success as sight cones of enemies do not reach inside. This also makes up for the BlindBlind debuff, as enemies cannot target the player character from outside the cloud if they are hiding.
  • In Early Access patch 9, Hide was a Bonus Action, but it was changed to an Action in the full release of the game. However, the Way of Shadow Monk subclass, the Gloom Stalker Ranger subclass, and the Rogue class are still able to Hide as a Bonus Action via class features.
