Obscurity affects the visibility of a creature or object to other creatures in an area. A creature is considered to be Obscured while located in a Lightly Obscured or Heavily Obscured area, and gains the conditions
Lightly Obscured or
Heavily Obscured respectively. Otherwise, they are considered to be in a
Clear Area.
A wide variety of equipment can bestow specific benefits on a character while they are in an Obscured state. Unless specified otherwise, a creature does not need to be
Hiding to gain these bonuses, as long as the area they are standing in is Lightly or Heavily Obscured. If an item states the user or target must be obscured without specifying Lightly or Heavily Obscured, then both types fulfill the requirement.
A player character's obscurity status is important when trying to remain hidden within the line of sight of a non-allied creature. If the player character is in a clear area, they are spotted immediately. If lightly obscured, they must make periodic Stealth checks contesting the creature's Passive Perception score. If heavily obscured, they cannot be detected. However, creatures with
Darkvision effectively downgrade the obscurity level by one, meaning they immediately spot lightly obscured characters and force heavily obscured ones to make Stealth checks.
