Notes

  • As a general rule, creatures have Advantage Icon.png Advantage on saving throws versus charm effects from enemies they are in active combat with. As a result, the saving throw for this action will always be rolled at advantage.
  • The way this reaction works is as follows:
    • An attacker targets the Enchantment wizard with any Attack roll. This includes weapon, spell, and unarmed attack rolls.
    • The Enchantment wizard triggers Instinctive Charm as a reaction before the attack is performed.
    • On a failed saving throw, an attackers action is interrupted and cancelled. Any resources spent on the attack, including spell slots in the case of attack roll spells, are also lost.
    • The attacker becomes Charmed Charmed by the Enchantment wizard for 1 turn.
    • The attacker is then given an Extra Attack Extra Attack, even if the attacker normally would not have access to that feature and even if the triggering attack was a spell.
    • This extra attack can be spent freely, but it cannot target the wizard due to the Charmed Charmed condition. Contrary to the description, using this free attack does not require an Reaction.
    • On a successful save, the attacker gains the Instinctive Charm: Unaffected Instinctive Charm: Unaffected condition which lasts indefinitely and the attack is performed as normal. Instinctive Charm can not trigger against attackers with this condition.
  • The way Instinctive Charm interrupts enemy attacks is very similar to Counterspell Counterspell except that it works against attacks targetting the Enchantment wizard. It even uses identical animations, visuals, and sound as Counterspell.
