For an explanation of all weapon properties, see Weapons.
Thrown is a weapon property that allows a weapon to be used as a projectile with the or actions.
A melee weapon with this property can be thrown for a ranged attack, and benefits from the creature's Ability Score Modifier (Strength) and Proficiency Bonus as usual, instead of being treated as an Improvised Weapon. This combines with the Finesse property: if throwing a Dagger, which has both Thrown and Finesse, the thrower's Dexterity Modifier may be used for the damage roll, though the Strength modifier is still used for the attack roll.

Notes[edit | edit source]
- In most cases, unless explicitly stated in a weapon's properties (e.g. 1d4 from a Lightning Jabber), additional damage found inherently on weapons with the Thrown property, such as the 1d4 on Shining Staver-of-Skulls, does not apply damage when thrown; however, additional weapon damage from other sources, such as the 1d6 on Helldusk Gloves, apply damage when thrown.
Bugs[edit | edit source]
- When initiating combat with a character using a returning throwing weapon, it does not trigger the returning property. This only triggers once they are actively in turn-order.
- Throw attacks use an attack roll of
RangedUnarmedAttack
, which triggersIsUnarmedAttack()
andIsRangedUnarmedAttack
. One result of this is that, in many cases, thrown attacks trigger effects which are described as only affecting unarmed attacks. - Throwing weapons when dual wielding interacts with fighting styles in the following way: the fighting style applied depends on the weapon that is not thrown and remains equipped. For instance, if a Trident and a Dagger are equipped (using the Dual Wielder feat), throwing the Dagger applies the Great Weapon Fighting style (and damage dices are rerolled if applicable) since the Trident is equipped as a two-handed weapon. On the other hand, if the Trident is thrown, the Dueling style damage bonus is applied.
