Efrin Hammerborn
Efrin is one of Auntie Ethel's victims. He is found in a petrified state in the Entrance Gallery of the Overgrown Tunnel near the Blinded Elf.
Involvement[edit | edit source]
Act One[edit | edit source]
The party can interact with Efrin when he is petrified, or after Auntie Ethel is killed. However, defeating Ethel without killing her - such as accepting Auntie Ethel's Hair in exchange for her freedom - does lift the curse, but using a Basilisk Oil potion is needed to cure him of the status condition.
Before or without killing the Hag[edit | edit source]
When first meeting Efrin, he is petrified. Using a Basilisk Oil potion at his feet cures him of the status condition and initiates a conversation with him. He reveals he has a disease called "The Bite" (also called Laduguer's Bite). Efrin yells at the party for "saving" him while the disease is not cured and immediately dies.
Casting Speak with Dead on Efrin after he dies provides more information about his life including his surname and family status.
After killing the Hag[edit | edit source]
After killing the hag, Efrin's curse is broken and he is unpetrified. He begins a conversation with the party immediately, warning that he has a disease called "The Bite":
- Efrin
- I was on death's door. But now I feel... I feel great. How?
- Search for any sign of Laduguer's Bite.
- Look for remnants of the hag's magic. (DC 15)
- Examine him for signs of Laduguer's Bite. (DC 15) (Non-duergar only)
- Examine him for signs of Laduguer's Bite. (DC 10)
- In the tales, hags always cook up their victim's misery first, then sell them false hope.
- Attune with your blood and search him for magic.
- I can feel the hag's magic on you - it tastes of sickness.
- Mordenkainen warns us that hags often cause their victims' tragedies.
- Examine him for signs of magic.
Picking one of the above options reveals that the curse was actually a magical infliction caused by the hag as well, and Efrin is freed and doesn't actually have Laduguer's Bite. He curses the hag, swearing that he will repay the party for his freedom, and escapes from the tunnel.
