Bernard is the construct guardian of the Arcane Tower in the Underdark.

Chapter One

Created by the former resident of the tower, Lenore, Bernard guards the Arcane Tower. It is located on the top level of the tower and wields the Light of Creation.

Bernard speaks only in poetry. If the player has read the book, The Roads of Darkness on a desk in the Arcane Tower upper floor, they will have the option to respond in kind with "Or art though friend, a rescue from my lonely wake?". Responding in any other way will cause Bernard to immediately become hostile and attack.

If the player replies to Bernard with the appropriate line from the play, it will acknowledge them as its master. The player can then speak additional lines from the play to cause Bernard to take certain actions:
