Overview[edit | edit source]

Background[edit | edit source]

Yurgir is an orthon who has been trapped in the Gauntlet of Shar for many years, unable to fulfil the requirements of his contract with Raphael. Under the devil's orders, he and his merregons devastated Ketheric Thorm's Dark Justiciars, killing all they found from the Grymforge to the Gauntlet.

Description[edit | edit source]

Yurgir is a towering and foreboding figure, a veteran of the Blood War who is confident in his command. He speaks in a low rumble, his skin hard and red with three large sets of horns curling from the crown of his head.

Yurgir loves a good fight, and has respect for capable warriors.

History[edit | edit source]

A long time ago, Yurgir fought on the front-lines of the Blood War.[1]

Sometime around the late 14th century DR, Ketheric Thorm Ketheric Thorm began amassing an army of Dark Justiciar Dark Justiciars. Infernal Mason Morfred, a Selûnite mason who had worked for Ketheric, including creating Moonrise Towers,[2] had tried to build a resistance against him to no avail. He eventually contacted Raphael Raphael, asking him to destroy Ketheric's army.[3] Raphael then recruited Yurgir and his band of Merregon Merregon Legionnaires for this mission; Yurgir signed a contract with Raphael:

Spill all the blood sworn to the night.
Silence all prayers; smother each rite.

Wander Shar's halls; hungry to slay;
Leave no Justiciar alive to obey.

Leave none to hear it, then be set free;
This song is your oath, swear, swear to me.[4][5]

His contract stated that he must fulfill its terms, die trying, or forfeit his freedom and become Raphael's slave. Yurgir carried out his attack with his legion of Merregons, breaking through the walls of the Grymforge and killing the Justiciar presence there.[6][7] He and his legion then moved to the Gauntlet of Shar to defeat the remaining Justiciars.

With no more Justiciars to be found, Yurgir and his band seemed to have succeeded. However, Yurgir remained bound to the Gauntlet. Unbeknownst to Yurgir, Raphael had given a book named One Becomes Many to the final Dark Justiciar, Lyrthindor Lyrthindor, which helped him to escape through splitting his body into a swarm of rats.[8]

Unable to fulfill and unwilling to break his contract and enter into servitude, Yurgir remained in the Gauntlet, hunting shadows for a hundred years.

Yurgir reciting the contract.

While exploring the Gauntlet of Shar, the party is lured by Nessa Nessa, a Displacer Beast, into an ambush with Yurgir and his Merregons.[9] Yurgir catches the scent of Raphael on them immediately and voices his hatred of the devil, explaining the details of their contract. As a result of the contract he intends to kill anyone that dare venture into his wing of the temple. The party can continue speaking to Yurgir to learn more about his circumstances and about the fate of the Dark Justiciars, and even agree to try and help free him. Proceeding through his encounter can go two ways: Kill Raphael's Old Enemy Kill Raphael's Old Enemy or Break Yurgir's Contract Break Yurgir's Contract

Killing Yurgir[edit | edit source]

Bards and Warlocks are given a unique opportunity to defeat Yurgir and his group through dialogue checks. It is also possible for other classes if they pass a DC 14 Insight check check after Yurgir recites his contract.[10]

It is possible to gain several inspiration points while dealing with Yurgir:

It is also possible to sneak up on Yurgir and his group, avoiding conversation entirely. Stealing from Yurgir's chests (such as using stealth) locks the party out of all friendly negotiations with him, even if the characters doing the stealing were not detected.

While in peaceful negotiations with Yurgir, the party can convince his displacer beast, Nessa to fight against him with a Persuasion check, after investigating the spider carcass.

Breaking Yurgir's contract[edit | edit source]

On exploring the Gauntlet of Shar, the party can discover the book One Becomes Many at the foot of the large statue of Shar Shar. It reveals that the rats in the area are actually parts of the final Dark Justiciar, baited into splitting by Raphael.

The party can defeat the rats, and then Lyrthindor Lyrthindor, and return to Yurgir so that he and Raphael can renegotiate the terms of his employment. This results in Yurgir returning to Raphael's House of Hope.[11]

Additionally, if present, Astarion Astarion becomes upset that the party have not killed Yurgir and questions them. He is furious and asks why he should remain in the party at all. It requires either a DC 14 Persuasion, or Deception check to convince him to remain in the party.[12]

Act Three[edit | edit source]

During Deal with the Devil Deal with the Devil in Act Three, the party can find Raphael Raphael at Sharess' Caress, where he offers them a deal; the Crown of Karsus Crown of Karsus in exchange for the means to free Prince Orpheus Orpheus.

Visiting camp[edit | edit source]

If the party freed Yurgir from his contract, the orthon appears one night during a Long Rest. He compliments the Campsite and tells the party to seek out the diabolist Helsik Helsik at the Devil's Fee in order to access Raphael's abode, the House of Hope. When questioned on his motives, Yurgir appears genuinely thankful for helping him with his contract and considers it a favour repaid.

House of Hope[edit | edit source]

Yurgir is encountered again while leaving the House of Hope after stealing from Raphael. In the ensuing fight, if the party helped free him from his contract, he switches allegiances and helps the party kill Raphael. If the party killed Yurgir in Act Two, he can still be persuaded to aid the party with a DC 30 Persuasion check. If performing the actions to free him of his contract, but not going through the related dialog, then it is still necessary to persuade Yurgir.

If Yurgir aids the party, he becomes an ally for Gather Your Allies Gather Your Allies. When summoned, he becomes an Attached Follower through the action Hellstalker Yurgir Hellstalker Yurgir.

If in the party and seeking to avoid Raphael offering the deal, Astarion must be disguised disguised when encountering Raphael at the Last Light Inn and the entrance to the Grand Mausoleum or far enough away to not be brought into these conversation cut-scenes with Raphael when they begin.
