Walkthrough edit
Recruiting Lae'zel edit
Lae'zel is first encountered on the Nautiloid in the Prologue, but can only become a full companion in Act One. If Lae'zel survives the Nautiloid crash, she can be found in a cage north of the Roadside Cliffs Waypoint at X: 224 Y: 372. If Lae'zel dies on the Nautiloid, her corpse can be found on the Ravaged Beach and revived using a Scroll of Revivify. Lae'zel can also be encountered at Mountain Pass near the Githyanki patrol.
Finding the crèche edit
Immediately upon recruiting Lae'zel, she insists on traveling to the nearest crèche. She claims the crèche houses a Zaith'isk, a sacred device which can cure the infected of their tadpoles through purification. If is completed, it is revealed that a Tiefling named Zorru recently encountered a Githyanki patrol. Zorru can be found in the Druid Grove near the storage barn. If Zorru is spoken to while Lae'zel is in the party, he admits encountering Githyanki near the Mountain Pass.
Upon arriving at the Mountain Pass, the party can encounter Kith'rak Voss and a squadron of Githyanki. If spoken with, Voss interrogates the party on the location of a stolen Githyanki artefact, polyhedric and inscribed with Githyanki runes. If Shadowheart is in the party, she realises he is seeking the Mysterious Artefact she carries. If Voss learns that the party possesses the artefact or they are infected with tadpoles, the Githyanki become hostile. Otherwise, Voss instructs them to return to the crèche, and the encounter ends peacefully.
Conflict at camp edit
During a Long Rest after the Githyanki encounter, Lae'zel confronts Shadowheart over the Mysterious Artefact. Lae'zel demands possession of the artefact, but Shadowheart adamantly refuses. Although they state an agreement to a duel at sunrise to settle their conflict, Shadowheart has no intention of leaving her victory to chance and the player character wakes up during the night to her holding a knife to Lae'zel's neck. If nothing is done, Shadowheart slits Lae'zel's neck and smashes her parasite as it crawls out. The player character can defend Lae'zel, causing Shadowheart to become permanently hostile, or persuade Shadowheart to peacefully end the conflict by passing a DC 10 Persuasion check.
Arriving at the crèche edit
Creche Y'llek is in the basement of the Rosymorn Monastery. Ghustil Stornugoss can be found in the infirmary there, where she claims she can purify the party of infection through use of a Zaith'isk. If the party agrees to purification, they can learn that the true purpose of a Zaith'isk is to extract the memories of the infected and then kill them. Whoever steps in the Zaith'isk must undergo saving throws to prevent -2 debuffs to Wisdom, Intelligence, and Constitution. These debuffs can be removed by consuming a Tadpole. The Zaith'isk ultimately explodes. Lae'zel questions whether the Ghustil was corrupted, demanding the party report her to the captain, Kith'rak Therezzyn.
Confronting the Inquisitor edit

In the Captain's Chambers, the Kith'rak of the crèche is berated by Inquisitor Ch'r'ai W'wargaz. A pathway leading through the Captain's Chamber is blocked by a Githyanki Barrier Disruptor at X: 1390 Y: -757. To open the path, a Gith Shard must be obtained from Kith'rak Therezzyn. Inquisitor W'wargaz recognizes the party and allows them entry. Alternatively, if the Kith'rak is shown the artefact, she demands that the party speak with the Inquisitor immediately.
In the Inquisitor's Chambers, W’wargaz bids the party to speak with him. If refusing, he grows impatient and becomes hostile. If the party speaks with him, he reveals the Githyanki have been following the party's movements because of their involvement with the Absolute.
The Inquisitor then demands the artefact. The party can ask questions or attempt to offer the artefact, which causes Vlaakith to appear through the Planecaster. Vlaakith demands the party kneel before her:
- (non-Githyanki) Who exactly are you?
- Stand tall - you are her equal in iniquity.
- Remain standing. You shall kneel before no one but the Dark Lady.
- Stay standing, just as you are.
- Wave politely.
- Kneel: choke down your brutal pride.
- Kneel before Vlaakith, your queen.
- Kneel.
Vlaakith then questions the party on how they came to be in possession of the artefact, which is actually an Astral Prism. She reveals that there is someone inside, who she claims is a compromised agent of the mind flayers, and commands the party to enter it and kill them. The party can respond with any of the following:
- My skills and fate are not subject to your whims.
- It is my greatest honour to obey.
- The god-queen of my people cannot kill someone herself?
- Try to peer into your queen's mind.
- I will do as you wish.
- Can't you kill the one inside yourself? I thought 'gods' were all-powerful.
- No. I answer to no one but Lady Shar - and anything that benefits you must surely harm her.,
- I'm afraid I don't do the bidding of extraplanar entities for free - bad for business.
- No way. I don't work for deluded tyrants.
- Try to peer into Vlaakith's mind.
-
So the dream visitor is inside the artefact... I can't kill them. They protect me from the Absolute.
- Fine. I will go in and kill them.
- No. In fact, maybe I'll free the one inside.
- If you're a god, do it yourself.
- I do not 'obey'. You have misjudged me, lich queen.
- You are confused, Vlaakith - I serve those in need of justice, not some tyrant god.
- I serve those of a loyal heart, not some astral god-queen. I will not obey you.
- My oath is sworn to the ancient magic of this world - not your astral empire. I owe you nothing.
- I obey the just laws of this realm, not the unjust laws of the Astral Plane.
If repeatedly mocking her godhood, Vlaakith casts the 9th-level spell Wish, killing the party and causing a Game-Over.
If the party simply refuse her demand to enter the prism, W’wargaz and the other Githyanki in the room become hostile. The Ch'r'ai is joined in combat by Ardent Jhe'rezath, Raider Kyrr'a'ath, Warrior Brelal'reth, and Ardent Qu'th.
If the party enter the prism, they can meet the Dream Visitor, who will only speak with the player character. The Dream Visitor explains that the power used to protect the party from the Absolute was stolen from the Githyanki. Additionally, the Visitor knows Vlaakith's empire is illegitimate and she does not possess the same power that Mother Gith did. The Visitor believes this is why Vlaakith wants them dead. The Visitor kneels and offers a blade to the player character, stating they can strike down the Dream Visitor if they believe it is right, but this is merely a test to reveal the player character's true intentions towards them. If fatally struck, the Dream Visitor appears to die from the wound, but then returns and expresses dissapointment at the betrayal.
After this conversation, the party return to the Material Plane. If the Inquisitor is still alive, he immediately attacks the party and the entire crèche becomes hostile. The party can fight their way through, attempt to sneak out, or escape through the Secret Stairway from the quest
. If not in turn-based mode, fast travel also is still possible.Vlaakith or Orpheus edit
The betrayal by the Inquisitor causes Lae'zel to question her loyalty. While she wants to believe that Vlaakith is testing her faith, she can be swayed by Kith'rak Voss, who enters the camp during a Long Rest. If Lae'zel agrees to listen to him, Voss claims that Vlaakith is a pretender and the true Prince, Orpheus, is the key to their race's future. He asks the party to meet him at Sharess' Caress in Baldur's Gate, which initiates . If Lae'zel refuses to listen to Voss, he becomes hostile, and it is revealed that he planned to meet a mysterious contact at Sharess' Caress.
An alternative path opens up by avoiding the confrontation with Vlaakith. The simplest way to do this is by avoiding the crèche entirely. However, another option is to avoid the Inquisitor in his chambers and instead move to the western hallway. Here, there are two statues that open the way to a secret stairway. If the party enters this stairway and makes it past the traps (documented in The Blood of Lathander. Choosing to do this without first using the Dawnmaster's Crest activates a Solar Machine which destroys the entire crèche (and kills any party members who fail to escape in time).
), they can obtainIf the creche storyline is not fully resolved (either by destroying the creche or speaking to the inquisitor), then Lae'zel eventually confronts the party and says that she intends to go back, unless passing a Intimidation check. And because Lae'zel was not betrayed by Vlaakith, she happily obeys her queen.
DC 6Vlaakith's Final Offer edit
In Act Three, after the first Long Rest upon entering Rivington, Vlaakith appears as a giant projection in the sky above camp. She comments on Lae'zel (depending on if she was betrayed at the crèche), and commands her to return to the Astral Prism and slay Orpheus. In doing so, she states she will reward Lae'zel with the title Baht t'Vlaakith, or Commander of Dragons.
If Lae'zel learns the truth from Voss and intends to continue to pledge loyalty to Vlaakith, the party can convince her otherwise:
-
Use the tadpole. Seek Vlaakith's mind through her psionic conveyance. (DC 18)
- Link to Lae'zel's parasite, show her Vlaakith's mind.
- Voss was right, Vlaakith is your slaver. Denounce her - you must walk free. (DC 30)
Otherwise, keeping silent or encouraging her to obey reinforces her loyalty to Vlaakith.
Conversely, if Lae'zel learns the truth from Voss and becomes intent on betraying Vlaakith, she can be convinced (with a difficult check) to change her mind again:
- Kneel, Lae'zel. To be the god-queen's Chosen is an extraordinary honour. (DC 30)
- Connect with Lae'zel's parasite. 'Commander of Dragons. This is your destiny.' (DC 30)
Lastly, if Lae'zel never learns the truth from Voss, the party must pass two or more ability checks to convince her:
-
Face the facts, Lae'zel. Vlaakith lied to your people. It's time you reject your queen. (DC 30)
- Poisoned by a life of propaganda. I pity you, Lae'zel. (DC 18)
- So the worm bows to the wyvern. Have some dignity, stand up to Vlaakith! (DC 18)
-
Use the tadpole. Seek Vlaakith's mind through her psionic conveyance. (DC 18)
- Link to Lae'zel's parasite, show her Vlaakith's mind. (DC 18)
Killing Kith'rak Voss edit
If Vlaakith does not betray Lae'zel, Voss does not appear in camp and cannot be found in Sharess' Caress or the sewers. Instead, Vlaakith orders Lae'zel to kill Orpheus, and Lae'zel remains unaware of Voss' betrayal. However, if Lae'zel turned on Voss, she demands the party hunt him down as an enemy of Vlaakith. This can be done either in Sharess' Caress or in the sewers.
Freeing Orpheus edit

Regardless of whose cause Lae'zel commits herself to, her objective remains the same: Free Orpheus from the Astral Prism; either to liberate him or slay him in Vlaakith's name. Well aware that the Orphic Hammer is the only thing capable of breaking Orpheus' bonds, Raphael approaches the party with an offer as part of : in exchange for the hammer, which he has in his possession, the party will surrender the Crown of Karsus after defeating the Elder Brain. Gale vehemently opposes the deal, as he has designs on the crown himself, while Lae'zel chastises the player character for sacrificing her people's future if the offer is declined. The quest can proceed in one of two ways, depending on the party's decision with Rapahel's offer:
- If refused, breaking into Raphael's House of Hope to steal the Orphic Hammer becomes the next objective of the quest Free Orpheus.
- If accepted, the the quest starts, which progresses in much the same way, the only difference being that the party must steal their contract instead of the hammer.
When shown the hammer as part of Silver Sword of the Astral Plane.
, Voss rewards the party with hisBack in the Astral Prism edit
However the party obtains the Orphic Hammer, they must wait for an opportunity to reenter the Astral Prism. One does not present itself until the player character fails to control the Elder Brain, it having transformed into a much more powerful being, a Netherbrain. The Emperor rescues the party by spiriting them away into the Astral Prism. Here it is revealed that the Emperor plans to assimilate Orpheus to gain his powers, and then take on the Netherbrain.
If Lae'zel is still aligned with Vlaakith, she is happy to let the Emperor assimilate Orpheus, as it fulfills her mission for her queen. If the party causes the Emperor to leave and rejoin the Netherbrain, Lae'zel must be convinced to delay her assassination until after the Netherbrain has been destroyed.
If Lae'zel abandoned Vlaakith and is brought to the Astral Prism, a Persuasion check must be passed to assimilate Orpheus without her becoming hostile. Otherwise, Lae'zel turns on the party and must be killed. The party can instead refuse the Emperor and free Orpheus. Without an illithid, however, someone must choose to transform - the player character, Karlach or Orpheus himself. Lae'zel becomes distressed with Orpheus if he decides to become an illithid, but does not become hostile as a result.
DC 30Additionally, if the party seek to free Orpheus but did not go to the House of Hope, Raphael appears with the Orphic Hammer, but now the party is forced to
and hand over the Crown of Karsus after the battle.Lae'zel's choice edit
Lae'zel's quest culminates in one final choice after the Netherbrain is defeated. She can choose to either return to the Astral Sea with Orpheus or Vlaakith (or alone to start a rebellion in Orpheus' name), or she can be persuaded to remain with her newly found friends in Faerun. For those who choose to romance Lae'zel, they can ride off with her on a Red Dragon.
