Rolan is a tiefling and aspiring wizard. He can be found within The Hollow of Emerald Grove arguing with his siblings Cal and Lia over whether they should help the refugees or leave.
“Rest assured, the names 'Rolan' and 'Lorroakan' will be known to you soon enough. You'll see.„
Involvement
Act One
Rolan can first be encountered just before the training area inside The Hollow of the Emerald Grove, arguing with his sister Lia on whether or not to stay and help the Tiefling Refugees against the Goblins while their brother Cal is trying to de-escalate their argument to no avail.
He is of the opinion that he and his siblings have no allegiance nor responsibility towards the Tiefling Refugees and thus should leave for Baldur's Gate for the sake of their own safety. His sister Lia on the other hand believes that they should help the refugees just because it is the right thing to do and accuses him of being selfish and only caring about his apprenticeship under the Wizard Lorroakan at Baldur's Gate.
Stay or Go
The party can choose to not interfere/support Rolan which results in him and his siblings leaving or persuade him to stay by passing the following skill check:
- DC 10 Persuasion check
If the Persuasion roll fails, Rolan and his siblings will leave, unless the option to offer money is chosen.
If successful, Rolan and his siblings will stay inside the Emerald Grove.
There are several special options for bypassing the skill check entirely:
- A fellow Tiefling can call upon Rolan to stand up for his people, because no one else will.
- Paladins can argue that it is the duty of the strong to protect the weak.
- Rangers can say that they would choose the wilderness over the city any day.
- Monks can say that to leave is a heavy choice and will weigh on whatever path they walk next.
- Dragonborn can stress the importance of clan and being with his people.
If Rolan decides to stay, he still expresses apprehension and unhappiness about staying. If asking why he is in a rush to leave, he reveals that he has recently become an apprentice to the Wizard Lorroakan and expresses his excitement over both his apprenticeship and potential future exploits while extolling his own magical talents and long-standing admiration of Lorroakan having the wizard he looks up to agree to teach him.
If Gale is present during this conversation he will recognize the name of Lorroakan and will comment that the wizard is seen as dishonorable and does not have good reputation in Waterdeep. Gale requests Rolan to introduce him to Lorroakan and the player character can interject by either supporting or rejecting the idea.
Should Rolan survive to join the celebration after the party Defeats the Goblins, he'll be entertaining Cal and Lia with a magic show.
If Rolan decides to go, and the grove is raided, he will die along with his siblings and many other tieflings, and their bodies can be found in front of the Blighted Village.
Act Two
If Rolan was persuaded into staying at the grove and has survived Act One, he can be found drowning his sorrows in alcohol in Last Light Inn. He angrily tells the party that his siblings Lia and Cal being taken to the Moonrise Towers as prisoners while he was busy defending the children of the tiefling refugees during an attack of The Cult of the Absolute. He will be angry with the party because of his perception that they are the reason his siblings were in danger and insist on going to find them himself; he must be saved during his attempt or he will fall to the shadow curse. One long rest after he leaves the safety of the inn is enough to condemn his fate. He can be found in the Ruined Battlefield, on the eastern shore of the river, south of the bridge that leads to the Reithwin Tollhouse X: -54 Y: -111.
Saving Lia and Cal before finding Rolan at Last Light Inn will result in him already being gone by the time the Party arrives at the Inn. If searched for at the Ruined Battlefield, he will be about to be attacked by Shadows. Speaking to Rolan at the Inn, then saving Lia and Cal before running into him at the Battlefield, might cause Rolan to die and to be afflicted by the Shadow curse.
If Rolan was not persuaded into staying at the grove, he and his siblings will not appear in Act Two. His absence also causes many of the tiefling refugees to perish during the Absolutist attack, most notably Bex, Mirkon and the other tiefling children.
Act Three
If he survived Act Two or left the grove during Act One, Rolan can be found manning the front desk at Sorcerous Sundries in place of Lorroakan's Projection, although his behavior is stiff and the narration will note that something seems wrong.
During the conclusion of Find the Nightsong, whether Rolan will side with or against his master upon hearing his plans for Dame Aylin depend on several factors:
- If both his siblings survived Act Two, he will side automatically against Lorroakan.
- If only one of them survived Act Two, Rolan will require either a DC 20 Intimidation check, DC 18 Persuasion check, or DC 15 Arcana check.
- If neither of them were saved, he will side with Lorroakan; though he can also side with Lorroakan if his siblings were saved before the party first visits Last Light Inn. This outcome also automatically happens whenever Rolan wasn't persuaded into staying at the grove during Act One, implying they did not survive the journey.
After the battle, if Rolan sided against Lorroakan he resolves to master the tower's secrets on his own and pledge its resources to aid in the final battle, cursing Lorroakan as a bastard and confessing to suffering daily abuse from the man. Rolan then becomes an ally for Gather Your Allies.
If Rolan dies during the battle with Lorroakan,
can be used to learn a little more of his background, including that he is not biologically related to Cal and Lia.Combat
