Criminal is a character background with skills and inspirations themed around law-breaking and the criminal underworld. The hireling Ver'yll Wenkiir has this background.

• Deception Proficiency: Gain Proficiency with Charisma (Deception) Ability Checks.
• Stealth Proficiency: Gain Proficiency with Dexterity (Stealth) Ability Checks.

Background goals

Performing certain actions that align with this background rewards Inspiration. These goals can be accomplished by any member of the active party, and Inspiration points are pooled, up to a maximum of 4. Completing an inspiration event also grants experience to characters with this background. While not necessarily all-inclusive, listed below are known events which grant inspiration points.

Druids Grove	20	Heretic	Steal the Idol of Silvanus. This inspiration is shared with  Idolatry.
	20	Jailbreaker	Smuggle Sazza out of the grove. Escorting Sazza out of the grove causes Smythin to disappear from the goblin camp. However, it is possible to escort out Sazza after saving Smythin to avoid him disapppearing.
	25	Serpent's Bounty	Take Zevlor's payment for killing Kagha.
	20	Show Them How It's Done	Steal from the tiefling children's stash without making enemies of them.
	20	The Allure of Coin	Steal from a child charmed by harpies. This inspiration is shared with  Protector of the Small and mutually exclusive with  Slaying the Piper. This is only possible if the interacting party member is a  Rogue.
Goblin Camp	25	Culling the Crowd	Use poison to kill the drunk goblins in camp.
	20	Slaughter's Prize	Ally with Minthara to loot and slaughter the grove. This is mutually exclusive with  Guardian of the Forgotten and  A Headless Horde.
Grymforge	25	A Fine Fortune	Steal Runepowder Barrel from Philomeen before conversation.
	50	Perfect Cut	Split Nere's money with the duergar mutineers.
Risen Road	30	Friend of the Family	Become an ally of the Zhentarim. The party must pickup or steal the Caravan Strongbox without opening it and deliver it to Zarys. This is earned after delivering.
	30	Open for a Surprise	Acquire the Iron Flask from the Zhentarim. The party can pickpocket, knock out, or kill Zarys for the Caravan Strongbox even after delivering it to her. If left with Zarys, it can instead be stolen or looted from Slick Inatra in Act Three.
Underdark	30	Swiftly Stolen	Obtain Thulla's magical boots through underhanded means.
Act 2
Gauntlet of Shar	75	Fickle Allegiances	Betray Balthazar after learning that Nightsong is not a simple relic.
	75	What's Yours is Mine	Take Shar's gem without aiding or killing the orthon. The party must use Greater Invisibility or similar to sneak in and pick up the Gem.
Mind Flayer Colony	95	Body Heist	Open and loot the mind flayer colony's vault.
Moonrise Towers	60	An Absolute Douceur	Accept the Absolute's promise of gifts. Can be triggered by cooperating with Marcus to abduct Isobel from Last Light Inn.
	60	Enter Nostalgia	Trespass into Ketheric and Isobel's respective rooms.
	75	Long-Awaited Reunion	Hand Isobel over to Ketheric Thorm.
	50	War Profiteer	Find Roah in Moonrise and trade with her.
Moonrise Towers Prison	60	Always a Way Out	Help the Moonrise prisoners escape.
	60	Escape Artisan	Give Wulbren his tools so the gnomes can escape.
Reithwin Town	60	A Dark Edge	Take Shar's dagger from the ritual pedestal. The pedestal is found in the Sharran Sanctuary, and taking the dagger spawns several enemies.

	60	Personal Payroll	Discover the Toll Collector's personal hoard at X: -125 Y: -90.

Shadow-Cursed Lands	50	Shiny Trinkets and Baubles	Take the drider's Moonlantern. This must be done via Deception checks during the convoy ambush, or by disarming him and picking it up mid-combat; not just killing him and looting the lantern.
Act 3
House of Hope	220	Interplanar Cat Burglar	Burgle and escape the House of Hope.
Lower City	220	A Pressing Heist	Rig the Baldur's Mouth printing press.
	170	Back into the Familiar	Gain a way into the Undercellar.
	220	Honour Among Thieves	Side with Nine-Fingers against the Zhentarim.

	170	Next Generation of Pockets	Assume a contributive role in Dez's parenting. The party must suggest to Dez Kanshaw at the Elfsong Tavern that his son should join the Guild. The option to do this is only available to Rogues.

• The enthralled fishermen were a group encountered in the crashed Mindflayer ship during early access but were removed for the release version, making this goal unobtainable.
