We do not turn on Father Murmath. But we do outgrow him. The fate of clan Lur lies with the Spider Queen!

Involvement[edit | edit source]

Act One[edit | edit source]

If approaching, the party can use Speak with Animals Speak with Animals to listen to the conversation between Xanta and the other spiders. Xanta is trying to convince the other spiders to leave Murmath Murmath and join the cult of Lolth Lolth.

Depending on dialogue choices, the other spiders can attack Xanta, or be convinced to join the cult.

  • Turning on your head-of-clan are you? I'm sure that'll end well.
    • You should know that spiders are revered among Lolth's faithful. Harming one of your kind is a capital crime. (if Religion check passed)
    • [DECEPTION] Murmath? Is that the guy who keeps telling everyone about his useless, hideous spiders? (DC 10)
    • [BARBARIAN] I don't care where you go, but it's time for all of you to leave. (DC 10)
    • [BERSERKER] FILTHY BUGS! LEAVE! (DC 10 Advantage Icon.png)
    • [PERSUASION] I think your sister is right - among the Spider Queen's worshippers, you'll reach your true potential (DC 10)
  • See how this mutiny plays out. (spiders attack each other)

Lolth-related party members get additional dialogue choices:

  • [PALADIN OF LOLTH] [LOLTH-SWORN] [CLERIC OF LOLTH] [RELIGION] Recall your learnings about the Spider Queen, Lolth. (DC 10)
  • [PALADIN OF LOLTH] [LOLTH-SWORN] [CLERIC OF LOLTH] Your sister speaks true. The Spider Queen would welcome you with great enthusiasm.
    • I'd rather not get involved in your little coup.
    • [RELIGION] I suppose the Order of the Soul Spiders would have room for you among their ranks. (DC 5)
    • [INTIMIDATION] The Spider Queen doesn't suffer hesitation. I fear for anyone who resists her call. (DC 5)
    • [BERSERKER] [INTIMIDATION] THE PRIEST IS WEAK. BECOME STRONG. (DC 5 Advantage Icon.png)
    • [PERSUASION] Among the Spider Queen's followers, you'd be revered as her physical manifestation. Honoured. Exalted. (DC 5)
    • [OATH OF THE ANCIENTS] [PERSUASION] Being bound to serve Murmath spits in the face of natural order. It limits you. (DC 7)
    • [OATH OF VENGEANCE] [PERSUASION] Why be bound to Murmath when you could be Lolth's avenging Justiciars? (DC 7)
    • [OATH OF DEVOTION] [PERSUASION] Your duty is to each other, not Murmath. Embrace that, and power unlimited will be yours. (DC 7)
    • [OATHBREAKER] [PERSUASION] You owe nothing to Murmath. Break your bonds, free yourselves. Become unstoppable. (DC 7)
    • [OATH OF THE CROWN] [PERSUASION] Lolth is your queen - not Murmath. Following great leaders will make you greater in turn. (DC 7)

Lastly, without Speak with Animals the party can attempt to communicate to varying degrees of success:

  • Kssrt!
  • [ANIMAL HANDLING] Try to discern the nature of their chatter. (DC 10)
    • Hey! Knock it off, the lot of you! (spiders leave)
    • Stand back and see how things play out. (spiders attack each other)
  • Attack the nearest spider. (begins combat)

Failing a check or choosing to not get involved results in Xanta being attacked by the other three spiders. Otherwise, the spiders are convinced and leave Grymforge peacefully. Party members with the Acolyte Acolyte background subsequently gain the Acolytes of the Demonweb Pits Acolytes of the Demonweb Pits inspiration.

Killing each spider gives 40 XP; killing Murmath Murmath gives 75 XP. Convincing them to leave earns the same experience as defeating them all.
