Environment
The Environment of Baldur's Gate 3 as defined here encompasses physical battlefield conditions that influence movement, visibility, positioning, and combat outcomes. Unlike character abilities or equipment, environmental effects are defined by the terrain itself or dynamically changed through interaction with it during encounters.
Terrain and Environmental Features[edit section | visual editor]
Surfaces[edit section | visual editor]
Surfaces cover portions of the ground and apply effects to creatures that enter them or start their turn within their area. Surfaces can be naturally occurring or generated by spells, consumables, or destructible items. They often apply conditions, deal elemental damage, alter movement speeds, or react dynamically with other elements, such as igniting grease or freezing water.
Clouds[edit section | visual editor]
Clouds occupy the air space above the terrain rather than replacing the ground floor. They affect creatures moving through their volume, providing concealment, applying conditions, blocking vision, or inflicting ongoing area damage. Examples include Fog Cloud and Cloudkill.
Difficult Terrain[edit section | visual editor]
Difficult Terrain doubles the expenditure of Movement Speed required to traverse an area. It can stem from natural environmental features, magical effects, or specific surfaces like ice and mud.
Objects and Structures[edit section | visual editor]
Interactive objects throughout the environment can be manipulated or destroyed to alter combat. This includes flammable braziers, water valves, destructible bridges, and explosive barrels, such as Firewine or Smokepowder barrels.
Vision and Positioning[edit section | visual editor]
Sight and Lighting[edit section | visual editor]
Sight mechanics dictate whether a creature can perceive a target or location. Targeting for most spells, weapon attacks, and actions requires a direct line of sight between the attacker and defender. Lighting levels (Clear, Lightly Obscured, and Heavily Obscured) determine visibility and directly influence Stealth checks and attack rolls.
Obscurity[edit section | visual editor]
Obscurity occurs when environmental factors like darkness, fog, or heavy smoke impede vision. Depending on an observer's senses – such as Darkvision – obscurity can impair line of sight, grant advantage or disadvantage on attack rolls, or prevent targeting altogether.
Elevation and High Ground[edit section | visual editor]
Terrain height affects combat positioning. Attacking from High Ground grants a bonus to Attack Rolls and extends effective range for certain abilities, while Low Ground applies penalties. Falling from elevated terrain inflicts fall damage and can cause the Prone condition.
Environmental Interactions and Strategy[edit section | visual editor]
Environmental systems frequently overlap to alter the battlefield. A single location can simultaneously feature a hazardous surface, an obscuring cloud, and difficult terrain. Furthermore, surfaces and clouds interact dynamically with elemental damage types:
- Chain Reactions: Applying Fire damage to a Grease or Oil surface ignites it into Fire, while Cold damage applied to Water freezes it into Ice.
- Tactical Control: Restricting sightlines with clouds forces ranged combatants into melee range, while layering difficult terrain with hazardous surfaces prevents enemies from closing distance effectively.
Using the environment effectively is crucial both before and during combat. Controlling creature movement, restricting sightlines, and managing hazards can offer tactical advantages just as valuable as dealing direct damage – if not more so.
