Overview[edit | edit source]

On a battlefield just west of the Selûnite Outpost, the party discovers the petrified form of this Drow Wizard among other Drow in the same condition. Dhourn holds one of the three pieces required to rebuild the powerful Mourning Frost, as well as a Memory Shard. If he is killed before speaking to him, the shard can be used to gather information on the Grymforge. Dhourn can be spoken to with Speak with Dead Speak with Dead.

History[edit | edit source]

Xargrim Xargrim, Filro Filro and Dhourn were trying to find the Adamantine Forge somewhere within the Underdark. Dhourn was responsible for finding the physical location. However, after discovering information about the forge each explorer wanted the glory for himself, and the three turned on each other.

Dhourn hired a mercenary group and planned an ambush for Xargrim, who in turn planned to ambush Dhourn. The two argued until Xargrim unleashed a Spectator who petrified Dhourn and his mercenaries. Dhourn's party remained in stasis long enough for his Memory Shard to fade.

Involvement[edit | edit source]

Exploring the area where the petrified Dhourn is found will trigger an attack from a Spectator. The spectator will first unpetrify Dhourn, who will fight alongside it unless the charm on him is broken by any amount of damage.

Once the spectator is defeated, Dhourn will explain that he is looking for the Grymforge, and that the spectator was set upon him by one of his enemies. Eventually he will attack his rescuers. However, if Filro has been killed, the party can avoid the topic of the Forge by informing him of this, and then deceiving him that Filro had nothing of interest. Dhourn will not attack at the end of the conversation, presumably under the belief that the party has no interest in the Forge.

Main characters who are Female Drow (or disguised as such) get unique interactions with Dhourn and can demand the Memory Shard from him without combat:

  • [LOLTH-SWORN] [PERSUASION] Every house is beholden to Lolth - as every male is beholden to their betters. (DC 5)
  • [LOLTH-SWORN] [INTIMIDATION] I must have misheard you. Perhaps you'll speak louder from a rack in Menzoberranzan. (DC 5)
  • [INTIMIDATION] I'm above house politics myself - but I'll still kill for what I want. (DC 5)
  • [BERSERKER] [INTIMIDATION] HAND IT OVER, BOY. OR ELSE. (DC 5 Advantage Icon.png)
  • [DECEPTION] House Ba'Tol, you said? You'll be welcomed back - all the male heirs died, I believe. (DC 5)

Combat remains an option afterwards. Combat can also be avoided if Dhourn does not survive the Spectator fight.

Tactics[edit | edit source]

The fight with the Spectator and then Dhourn can be skipped by using a Familiar. A Familiar exploring the area and attacking the petrified drow will not trigger the Spectator. A Familiar can therefore walk down from the Selûnite Outpost waypoint and kill Dhourn while he is petrified--his body is the closest to the top right of the cragged rock.

A character can then sneak to the body, loot it, and sneak back to Selûnite Outpost, obtaining Dhourn's loot with no combat. Classes without familiars can achieve this as well by using the Cheeky Quasit familiar from the Apothecary's Cellar.
