Act One

Main article: Discover the History of Prince Orpheus

Varrl is in the midst of being reprimanded by his combat instructor,  Sa'varsh Kethk. Kethk is disgusted by the youth's countenance, soft for a githyanki warrior, and seeks a challenger to fight the boy to teach him a lesson. If they are uninterrupted, a party member steps up to fight, or if an ensuing ability check fails, Varrl is killed.

Alternatively, if the interacting party member persuades Kethk to spare him, or he is knocked out and then healed, Varrl can be spoken to afterwards. Varrl confesses his doubts on the teachings of  Vlaakith but stops short of naming who the player character reminds him of. They can coax the name 'Orpheus' from him which causes him to reveal the story of  Orpheus, and offers the party  Orpheus, Prince of the Comet, Part Two: Sacrifice if he is persuaded to or he is shown the first part. The player character can betray Varrl's confidence by revealing his heretical education to Kethk, resulting in Varrl's death.

Varrl may also reveal that he placed Orpheus' mark somewhere in the crèche, hoping to find another interested in Orpheus' story. The mark is on Vlaakith's portrait, a black line drawing of a streaking comet.

More information about Varrl is in a book in the infirmary.  Ghustil Stornugoss has healed Varrl 47 times, considers him a waste of resources, and asks Sa'varsh Kethk to "do something about him", which may have prompted the confrontation the party saw.

When the crèche becomes hostile, Varrl disappears with the gith children, which may prevent the party from completing the quest.
