Am I not astonishing? A robust diet makes for a shrewd mind, you see. I am a gourmand...

Involvement[edit | edit source]

Act One[edit | edit source]

Lump is in the Blighted Village with Chock Chock and Fank Fank. If approaching Lump, he asks to see their mark of the Absolute. If not having received the brand of the Absolute from Gut Priestess Gut, Lump attacks unless he is convinced otherwise:

  • [BRANDED] Show him your brand.
  • [DECEPTION] I'll do you one better - I'm one of the Absolute's chosen disciples. (DC 10)
  • [BARBARIAN] [INTIMIDATION] What about you? I'm feeling hungry... (DC 10)
  • [BERSERKER] [INTIMIDATION] ROAR. (DC 10 Advantage Icon.png)
  • [PALADIN] [INTIMIDATION] Try to eat me and I'll brand your corpse with the mark of my oath. (DC 10)
  • [DECEPTION] Flash your arm at him. There you are. You could see the brand, could you not? (DC 10)
  • [INTIMIDATION] Do not test the Absolute's finest, ogre. You would not survive Her wrath. (DC 10)

Lump can be convinced to work for the party instead of the Absolute:

  • I'll give you 500 gold if I can call you into battle.
  • [DECEPTION] I'll give you 1000 gold - after you fight for me. (DC 10)[2]
  • I'll give you 1000 gold - after you fight for me.[3]
  • [ROGUE] [DECEPTION] 1000 gold - to be paid once the killing's done. (DC 5)[2]
  • [BARBARIAN] [INTIMIDATION] How about I spare your life. That tempting enough? (DC 20)
  • [BERSERKER] [INTIMIDATION] JOIN ME OR I'LL CRUSH YOU TO PULP! (DC 20 Advantage Icon.png)
  • [PERSUASION] I'll pay you in the flesh of the fallen - you'll have your fill. (DC 15)[3]
  • [PERSUASION] I'll pay you in the flesh of the fallen - you'll have your fill. (DC 20)[2]
  • [PALADIN] [INTIMIDATION] Fight for me and my oath or I'll cut the last meal from your belly. (DC 20)

If Lump agrees to work for the party, he offers Lump's War Horn, which can be used three times to summon Lump and his two ogre companions. He and his ogre companions leave Blighted Village and can be called upon if the party do not stray too far. For example, the horn cannot be used in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. If the party pickpocketed the horn from him, blowing it leads to combat with the ogres, as Lump deduces the horn was stolen from him.

If promised gold, Lump collects it after the first fight, at which point he can be paid, attacked, or convinced to wait for a 2500 gold payment after the next fight with a DC 15 Deception check.

If Lump was promised gold but never called, he eventually appears in camp to collect, and the party can pay him or intimidate him into leaving:

  • Pay him what you promised.
  • [INTIMIDATION] We have a new bargain: I pay nothing, and you leave the camp alive. (DC 20)
  • [BERSERKER] [INTIMIDATION] FOLLOW ME AGAIN AND I'LL EAT YOU. (DC 20 Advantage Icon.png)
  • [BARBARIAN] [INTIMIDATION] You can leave alive, or you can roast over my campfire. (DC 20 Advantage Icon.png)

Any other option causes the ogres to attack.

Lump accidentally ate a Warped Headband of Intellect, which is the source of his unusually high Intelligence for an Ogre.[4]

Promising to pay Lump with the corpses of slain enemies grants Inspiration Icon.pngCreatures of Bloodlust for the haunted one background. Convincing the ogres to work for the party without offering gold grants Inspiration Icon.pngPyramid Scheme for the urchins.

Tactics[edit | edit source]

Lump is vulnerable to many spells due to his low Wisdom Wisdom. His AC is also quite low, despite being higher than most ogres. Bursting him with powerful spells and strong melee attacks like Divine Smite Divine Smite prevents him from unleashing too much damage. Smokepowder Smokepowder is also effective against him.

If the party is a sufficient distance away, Lump casts Blur Blur which will make him more difficult to hit. Breaking his Concentration can be difficult due to his high Constitution Constitution. He also throws Acid Arrow to create Acid Acid surfaces. Similar to other ogres, Lump excels at melee combat and is capable of dealing significant damage. He also exploits the party's use of Grease Grease with Fire Bolt Fire Bolt, lighting the area on fire.

Notes and references[edit | edit source]
