Farslayer of Bhaal Ghislev, also referred to as Farslayer Ghislev, is a character who can be encountered in the Undercity Ruins area of Baldur's Gate 3, during Act Three.

Overview

Ghislev serves as part of a "test" to any characters who want to enter the Temple of Bhaal.

When the party reaches a certain location in the Undercity Ruins, Ghislev will trigger a combat encounter with the party, take a very early spot in the initiative order, and often will apply 1 round of Surprised Surprised to all party members. The conditions Surprised can be avoided by perceiving (DC 30) other cult members and not being ambushed, or by otherwise moving close enough to the Farslayer to begin combat with him alone.

As Ghislev's first turn, he will say: "The trial begins. Best me and pass, or die." and use an ability Bhaal's Power Word Kill Ritual Bhaal's Power Word Kill Ritual. Ghislev will gain the condition Ritual Chant: Bhaal's Power Word Kill Ritual Chant: Bhaal's Power Word Kill, and apply a separate condition to all friendly party members within 55 metres of Farslayer called Bhaalist Ritual Target Bhaalist Ritual Target. Both of these conditions have a duration of 6 rounds.

Other Bhaalist entities in the area will gain the condition Entranced Murderer Entranced Murderer, which has the description of "Affected entity has been entranced by the Farslayer. Defeating the Farslayer will break the trance and garner victory." --Ghislev is the only such "Farslayer" entity in this combat encounter. Additional Bhaalist entities are hiding in invisibility at several places in proximity of this encounter.

Once Farslayer Ghislev is defeated, the remaining Bhaalist entities in the fight will gradually leave the turn order on subsequent turns. This is not typical of other fights in the game.

Strategies

  • The 'ritual chant' spell used by Ghislev requires concentration. Knocking Ghislev prone has a high rate of interrupting his concentration, preventing him from completing the chant.
  • Crossing the stone bridge across the chasm is not the only way to reach Ghislev.
  • Invisible heroes will not trigger the Farslayer or the ambush. So an invisible character, in turn based mode, can dash through the whole arena and make it out the other side. There are no enemies (though there are traps) between the exit of the arena and the Temple of Bhaal waypoint. Once the waypoint is active the party can be reunited and continue on, skipping the encounter completely.
  • Ghislev has relatively low Constitution Saving Throw, therefore a very effective strategy is to cast Flesh to Stone Flesh to Stone as soon as the fight starts, and he'll turn to stone before he's able to complete the chant, cancelling the spell and rendering him immobile and vulnerable. If the caster gets surprised and isn't able to apply the spell on Round 1, there will still be enough time for Ghislev to turn to stone if casting Flesh to Stone on Round 2.

Quotes

As part of the challenge to enter the temple, the Farslayer has begun chanting. It can cast Bhaal's Power Word Kill once its profane ritual ends. Exiting the Farslayer's chanting range of 55m makes its enemies invulnerable to the effect. Slaying the Farslayer stops the ritual and wins the conflict.
