“Gods, who knew such a vile abcess lurked in the bedrock of the city. The very stone reeks of misery and despair.„
Overview[edit section | visual editor]

Bhaal Temple is the innermost sanctum of the cultists of Bhaal, headed by Orin the Red. It is located deep within the Undercity, past the Undercity Ruins. Though the temple has been destroyed in the past, it was rebuilt and now serves as a home base for the cult of Bhaal.[2]
Access[edit section | visual editor]
A large stone door prevents access to the temple and can only be opened with the Amulet of Bhaal, which can be acquired at the end of the quest Impress the Murder Tribunal or looted from Sarevok Anchev. The Dark Urge can enter the temple without the Amulet, as Sceleritas Fel opens the door for them.
When first discovered the following inspiration is granted:
- Forgotten, Bloodied, Halls ( Acolyte backgrounds)
- Homecoming ( Haunted One backgrounds)
- The Face of Evil ( Outlander backgrounds)
While inside the temple the party cannot fast travel or go to camp.
Locations[edit section | visual editor]
Main area[edit section | visual editor]

The Bhaal Temple consists of a large main area with a forked higher ground surrounding a lower situated platform upon which the Altar of Bhaal is located. The upper area has alcoves with bodies on display. The alcoves located in the northwestern corner at X: 35 Y: 1035 and the one in the southwestern corner at X: 35 Y: 976 both potentially contain the real characters who Orin impersonated in Rivington during the current playthrough. The corpses can include one or more of these potential victims:
- Dying Stone Lord Thug[verify]
- Fist Rowan
- Gyldro Angleiron the Smith
- Lens the Journalist
- Zethino[verify]
If Orin has impersonated none of the characters or only one, Dorghan can be found instead in the southern alcove.
On the northern side around X: 43 Y: 1032 is a rack of scrolls located with a plaque called 'A Lending Library'. Interacting with it prompts 'Borrowed Scrolls Must be Returned within a Tenday' - It seems the Temple to Murder has a lending library.. The rack contains only one item, The Ecstasy of Murder.
Going down from either sides of the forks brings the party to the Altar of Bhaal. On the northern side is a hidden passageway which allows access to the Chosen's Room without going through the altar (and the potential fight).
Altar of Bhaal[edit section | visual editor]
Situated at X: 59 Y: 1007, the altar of Bhaal is located at the center of the temple. The altar itself lies atop a platform where Orin and her retinue are waiting for the party to arrive. Orin's victim, if applicable, is chained to the altar. Here the party must fight Orin and her allies as part of Get Orin's Netherstone and Rescue Orin's Victim. If the Dark Urge approaches her, a duel ultimately takes place between the two. After confronting Orin, the Dark Urge may accept or embrace their fate as Bhaals's Chosen, or they can refuse it.
The Altar itself can be opened using the Altar Key looted from Orin, lockpicked with a DC 25 Sleight of Hand Check, or opened with Knock. For more details, see Involvement.
The Chosen's Room[edit section | visual editor]

A stairway behind the altar leads to the Chosen's Room, which serves as Orin's private quarters. It can alternatively be entered from the north side of the upper area, avoiding the altar, the entrance is around X: 76 Y: 1033.
In the room is a desk which contains Orin's Chest Key, a Manifesto and some maps. The corpse of Orin's mother and half-sister Helena Anchev is behind the desk. The party can use Speak with Dead on Helena to gain additional background information.
On the other side of the room lies Cruor together with a book Experiment on Cruor.
At the end of the room is a bed. Next to it lies the body of a Fallen Bhaalspawn.[3] Next to the bed is a locked Wooden Chest which can be opened with Orin's Chest Key. It contains Blood-Envy for the Unworthy, a Purple Worm Toxin and Drow Poison.
Involvement[edit section | visual editor]
The Bhaal Temple serves as home base for Bhaal cultists and their leader Orin. It is the place where Get Orin's Netherstone and its sub-quest Rescue Orin's Victim are resolved. A pivotal decision must be made for the Dark Urge origin character in regards to their personal quest The Urge. Whether or not the Dark Urge is picked also influences the way the other two quests are resolved.
If the party face Orin without killing Gortash but having told her they would during their confrontation in the Lower City Sewers, the following inspiration is granted:
- Always Trust a Dishonest Person ( Charlatan backgrounds)
The Rescue[edit section | visual editor]
In the center of the temple lies the kidnapped victim of Orin, as part of Rescue Orin's Victim. The victim is chained to the Altar of Bhaal. If the player character begins a conversation with Orin and picks the wrong option or fails a check, Orin immediately murders her victim. To save them, the player character must either succeed a check or use information on Orin's mother Helena Anchev. Helena Anchev can be found behind the altar in the Chosen's Room, which can be accessed via a hidden way on the northern side of the temple. The spell Speak with Dead can be used to commune with her. The same can be achieved by exposing Sarevok as her father by reading A page from Sarevok's book in the Murder Tribunal. As an alternative to the dialogue options, the party can begin combat by attacking (with or without surprise), bypassing the dialogue entirely and preventing the hostage getting killed by Orin.
The Altar can be opened using the Altar Key looted from Orin, lockpicked with a DC 25 Sleight of Hand Check, or opened with Knock. If freed during combat, the victim joins the fight as a controllable character. Stealthily lockpicking the altar before engaging in the battle initiates dialogue with Orin, as if the victim were still restrained, but allows the interacting party member to bypass dialogue checks that may otherwise convince Orin not to kill her hostage.
Fighting Orin[edit section | visual editor]
As mentioned, whether the Dark Urge is picked as origin or not influences the fight with Orin. If the party choose dialogue options without ability checks, Orin becomes enraged and calls on Bhaal's power to transform into the Slayer. However, the party can also choose to taunt her further by succeeding a DC 25 Deception, Persuasion, or Religion Check, which causes Orin to completely break down since she is unable to cope with the truth. Bhaal then speaks to her through the giant skull effigy carved into the temple wall, commanding her to fight and unnaturally forcing her body into the Slayer form. Regardless of the outcome of the conversation, Orin attacks when it concludes.
If the Dark Urge was not chosen as origin, the party fights Orin, together with her allies, consisting of the Reapers of Bhaal Eglantine, Hiila, Liya, Ogga, and Snirr, the Death's Head of Bhaal Fustian and the Invoker of Bhaal Hivune. At the end of the turn, the Boon of Bhaal will cast its spell. It will only participate for as long as the Reapers of Bhaal are chanting.
Killing Orin grants the following inspirations:
- Putting the Past to Rest ( Soldier backgrounds)
- Securing Your Line ( Haunted One backgrounds)
The quest Get Orin's Netherstone resolves by looting Orin's Netherstone from her corpse.[4]
The Dark Urge[edit section | visual editor]
If the Dark Urge is picked, they must challenge her to one-on-one duel with neither of their comrades interfering per the Bhaalist tradition. If the Dark Urge refuses to duel Orin, she immediately executes the hostage. The party must then fight the standard version of the boss encounter; following the battle, the story proceeds as if the Dark Urge had lost the duel.
After confronting Orin, the Dark Urge may restore themselves as Bhaals's Chosen, or refuse the title. Should they refuse to become Bhaal's chosen, the Dark Urge is drained of their father's blood and essence, dying immediately, but are soon brought back from death by Withers. Reborn anew, the player character is free of their Dark Urge, they lose access to the Slayer form if they had previously obtained it in Act Two. Rejecting their legacy grants the following inspiration:
- Bhaalspawn No More ( Haunted One backgrounds)
Should they agree to become Bhaal's chosen once more, they are instead tasked to control the Netherbrain in the name of Bhaal, and gain access the Slayer form if they did not already. Embracing their legacy grants the following inspiration:
- Return of the Bhaalspawn ( Haunted One backgrounds)
